A new drum unit can print approximately 17,000 A4 or Letter size single-sided pages.

Note

•	There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 17,000 pages. The actual number of pages that your drum will print may be significantly less than this estimate. Because we have no control over the many factors that determine the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages that will be printed by your drum.
•	For best performance, use only genuine Brother toner. The printer should be used only in a clean, dust-free environment with adequate ventilation.
•	Printing with a third-party drum unit may reduce not only the print quality but also the quality and life of the printer itself. Warranty coverage does not apply to problems caused by the use of a third-party drum unit.

If the LCD shows Drum End Soon, it means the drum unit is near the end of its life. We recommend that you replace the drum unit with a new one before there is a noticeable deterioration in the print quality.

Replacing the drum unit

CAUTION

	While removing the drum unit, handle it carefully because it may contain toner.
	Every time you replace the drum unit, clean the inside of the printer. (See Cleaning.)

Turn off the printer power switch. Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops.

Release the gray lock lever (1) that is on the left side of the printer. Pull the drum unit completely out of the printer using the green handles on the drum unit.

CAUTION

	Hold the green handles of the drum unit when you carry it. DO NOT hold the sides of the drum unit.
	We recommend that you place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
	Handle the toner cartridges carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.

Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

CAUTION

	To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.
	To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations.

Unpack the new drum unit and remove the protective cover.

CAUTION

Wait to unpack a drum unit until immediately before you put it in the printer. Exposure to direct sunlight or room light may damage the drum unit.

Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge colour to the same colour label on the drum unit, and make sure that you fold down the toner cartridge handle (1) once the toner cartridge is in place. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

2.M - Magenta

3.Y - Yellow

4.K - Black

Put the drum unit back in the printer as follows.

Make sure that the gray lock lever (1) is in the up position and put the drum unit in the printer. Push down the gray lock lever (1).

Note

When you put the drum unit in the printer, match the green guides (1) of the drum unit handle to the green arrows (2) on both sides of the machine.

Push the drum unit in until it stops.

Close the front cover.

When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you need to reset the drum counter by completing the following steps:

1	Turn the printer power switch back on.
2	Press the + or - key to choose Machine Info..
3	Press OK to proceed to the next menu level, and then press the + or - key to choose Reset Parts Life.
4	Press OK, and then press the + key to choose Drum Unit.
5	Press OK two times.
