Scan a document into PaperPort® using the TWAIN driver.
The Brother MFL-Pro Suite software includes a TWAIN compliant scanner driver. TWAIN drivers meet the standard universal protocol for communicating between scanners and software applications. This means that not only you can scan images directly into the PaperPort® 9.0SE viewer that Brother included with your machine, but you can also scan images directly into hundreds of other software applications that support TWAIN scanning. These applications include popular programs like Adobe® PhotoShop®, Adobe® PageMaker®, CorelDraw® and many more.
To Access the Scanner follow the steps listed below:
Open PaperPort. Click START => (ALL) PROGRAMS => SCANSOFT PAPERPORT 9.0 => PAPERPORT.
Click FILE, then SCAN or select the SCAN button at the top of the screen if not already selected. The Scan panel should then appear on the left side of the screen.
From the SCANNER drop down list select the following:
Windows XP Users: TW-Brother MFC-9420CN
Windows 9X-2000 Parallel cable users: Brother MFC9420CN
Windows 9X-2000 USB cable users: Brother MFC9420CN USB
Windows 9X-2000 Network users: Brother MFC9420CN LAN
Click SCAN. The SCANNER SETUP dialog box will appear.
Place the document you wish to scan face up in the automatic document feeder, or face down on the scanner glass.
Adjust the following settings, if required, in the Scanner window:
a. Scan (type of document)
Photo: Select for scanning photo images. (Resolution, 300x300 dpi, Scan type 24bit color)
Web: Select for attaching the scanned image to web pages. (Resolution, 100x100 dpi, Scan type 24bit color)
Text: Select for scanning text documents. (Resolution, 200x200 dpi, Scan type Black & White)
This is how "sharp" and image will be based on the dots per an inch scanned (DPI). The higher the DPI the clearer the image will be, however the scan time and document size will increase.
150 x 150 DPI (recommended for text only scans)
200 x 200 DPI
300 x 300 DPI (recommended for OCR scan jobs, minimum for photos.)
400 x 400 DPI
600 x 600 DPI
c. Scan Type
This is the color scan option. The higher the color quality selected the longer the scan job will take to complete and the larger the file size will be.
Black & White (recommended for text only scans.)
Gray (Error Diffusion) (recommended for text only scans.)
True Gray (Recommended for gray scale photos or text.)
256 Color (recommended for picture graphics, and color charts.)
24bit Color (Recommended for high quality photos.)
*NOTE: Although using 24 bit color creates and images with the most accurate colors, the image file will be approximately three times larger than a file created with 256 color.
Adjust the setting (-50 to 50) to obtain the best image. The default value is 0, representing an average. You can set the level by dragging the slide bar to the right or left to lighten or darken the image. You can also type a value in the box for the setting. If the scanned image is too light, set a lower brightness value and scan the document again. If the image is too dark, set a higher brightness value and scan the document again.
*NOTE: Brightness setting is only available when Black & White, Gray (Error Diffusion), or True Gray is selected.
You can increase or decrease the contrast level by moving the slide bar to the left or right. An increase emphasizes dark and light areas of the image, while a decrease reveals more detail in gray areas. You can also type a value in the box for the setting.
*NOTE: The Contrast setting is only adjustable when you have selected one of the gray scale settings. It is not available when Black & White and Color settings as the Scan Type.
