You can scan images directly into the PaperPort® 9.0SE viewer that Brother included with your machine or you can scan images directly into other software applications that support WIA (Windows Image Acquisition)  or TWAIN scanning. To scan using the WIA driver follow the steps listed below:

1. Open PaperPort by clicking  START => (ALL) PROGRAMS => SCANSOFT PAPERPORT 9.0 => PAPERPORT.

    

2. Click FILE and then  SCAN or select the SCAN button at the top of the screen.  The Scan panel should then appear on the left side of the screen.

    

3. From the SCANNER drop down list select WIA-Brother MFC-9420CN.

    

4. Click SCAN.  The SCANNER SETUP dialog box will appear.

    

5. Place the document you wish to scan face up in the automatic document feeder, or face down on the scanner glass.

    

6. For "Paper Source" select either Document Feeder or Flatbed depending on where you have placed the document.

    

7. Select the document type from the following list:
   
   a. Color picture
   
   b. Grayscale picture
   
   c. Black and white picture or text
   
   d. Custom Settings

    

8. To the brightness, contrast and/or DPI of the scanned image click "Adjust the quality of the scanned picture". Click OK when your selections are completed.

    

9. To start scanning your document, click the SCAN button in the Scan dialog box.

    

10. When the scanning is complete, you will be prompted with the following options:
    
    a. Scan More Pages. (Select this option if you wish to add additional pages to this scan job).
    
    b. Scan Other Side. (Select this option to perform a manual 2-sided/duplex scan of documents with images on both sides of a page.
    
    c. Done. (Select this option if you are completed scanning.)

     

11. When you are done scanning you will be taken to the PaperPort desktop and the scanned document should appear.
