How do I connect the printer to my computer via Wi-Fi®?

To print using a wireless network connection, you must download and install the printer driver and Printer Setting Tool.

 

Establishing a wireless network connection using a USB cable temporarily (recommended)

 

  1. Confirm the SSID and password of your WLAN access point/router beforehand.
  2. Download and install the printer driver and P-touch Editor from the [Downloads] section of this website.
  3. When installing the printer driver, the setting items for the wireless network connection will be displayed. Complete the setup according to the on-screen instructions.

If you do not know the SSID and password of your WLAN access point/router, contact your system administrator.

 

If you did not configure the wireless network connection settings when installing the printer driver, you can use one of the following configuration methods.

 

  1. Establishing a wireless network connection using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™)
  2. Establishing a wireless network connection using Infrastructure mode
  3. Establishing a wireless network connection using Wireless Direct
  4. Establishing a wireless network connection using Infrastructure Mode + Wireless Direct
  5. Establishing a wireless network connection using the Ad-hoc mode

 

  1. Establishing a wireless network connection using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™)

    If your WLAN access point/router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™) , settings and connections can be configured easily with the press of a button.

     

    1. First, confirm that your WLAN access point/router has the WPS symbol and place the printer within the range of the WLAN access point/router. The range may differ depending on your environment.

    2. Press the WPS button on your wireless access point/router.
    3. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    4. Press the [ Arrow ] button to select the [WPS] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    5. Select [Start], and then press the [OK] button.
      When the connection is established, the WLAN icon appears on your printer's LCD. Computers that are on the same network as the printer will have access to the printer.

      Your printer will try to connect using WPS for two minutes. If the [Menu] button is pressed during that time, the printer will continue trying to connect for an additional two minutes.

  2. Establishing a wireless network connection using Infrastructure mode

     

    1. Confirm the SSID (network name) and password (network key) of your WLAN access point/router beforehand.
    2. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
    3. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button. Set [On/Off] to [On].
    4. Configure the Infrastructure mode settings of the printer. You can configure the settings from the printer or your computer.

      Using your printer

      1. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
      2. Press the [ Arrow ] button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
      3. Select [Infrastructure], and then press the [OK] button.

      Using your computers

      1. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click the [Communication Settings] button.
      2. Select [Wireless LAN] for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab, and select [Infrastructure] for [Communication Mode] in [Wireless Settings] in the [Wireless LAN] tab.

    5. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click the [Communication Settings] button.
      Select [Wireless Settings] in the [Wireless LAN] tab.

    6. Enter the SSID that you have noted, or click [Search] and select the SSID from the displayed list.
    7. Enter the password in the [Passphrase] field.

      The required information depends on the authentication method and encryption mode; enter only the information relevant to your network environment.

    8. To send the settings to the printer, click [Apply] .
    9. When the connection is established, the Wi-Fi icon appears on your printer's LCD.

  3. Establishing a wireless network connection using Wireless Direct

     

    Wireless Direct allows you to connect the printer to your computer directly without a Wi-Fi access point/router; the printer serves as a Wi-Fi access point.

    1. Confirm the Wireless Direct settings of the printer. You can configure the settings from the printer or your computer.

      Using your printer

      1. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
      2. Press the [ Arrow ] button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
      3. Select [Direct], and then press the [OK] button. The Wireless Direct icon appears on the LCD.

      Using your computers

      1. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
      2. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click the [Communication Settings] button.
      3. Confirm that [Wireless Direct] is selected for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab.

    2. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button. Set [On/Off] to [On].
    3. Use your computer to select the SSID of your printer ("DIRECT-[the last five digits of the serial number]_[model name]"). If required, enter the password ("205[the last five digits of the serial number]" for RJ-2050, "214[the last five digits of the serial number]" for RJ-2140, or "215[the last five digits of the serial number]" for RJ-2150). (You can find the serial number label on the back of the printer.)
    4. Next, you need to add the printer to the computer. Click here to see the steps.

  4. Establishing a wireless network connection using Infrastructure Mode + Wireless Direct
     

    Infrastructure Mode and Wireless Direct can be used at the same time. You can configure the settings from the printer or your computer.

     

    Using your printer

    1. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    2. Press the [ Arrow ] button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    3. Select [Direct/Infra], and then press the [OK] button.
    4. Next, you need to add the printer to the computer. Click here to see the steps.

    Using your computers

    1. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click the [Communication Settings] button.
    2. Select [Infrastructure and WirelessDirect] for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab.

  5. Establishing a wireless network connection using the Ad-hoc mode

    Not all computers, mobile devices, and operating systems, may support Ad-hoc mode.

    1. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
    2. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click [Communication Settings] .

    3. Confirm that [Infrastructure or Ad-hoc] is selected for [Selected Interface] in [Communication Settings] in the [General] tab.
    4. Select [Ad-hoc] for [Communication Mode] in [Wireless Settings] in the [Wireless LAN] tab, enter any name to the [SSID] field, and then click [Apply] to send the settings to the printer.
    5. Use a computer to search for and connect to the printer.  Use the SSID that you entered in step “d” .

    How to add the printer to the computer.

     
    1. Display [Devices and Printer] on your computer.
    2. Click [Add a printer].
    3. Click [Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer] – [Next] .
    4. Click [The printer that I want isn’t listed] - [Next].
    5. Select [Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname], and click [Next].
    6. Select [TCP/IP Device] for [Device type].
    7. Enter your printer's IP address in [Host name or IP address].

      Your printer's IP address is displayed in [Current Status] under the [Wireless LAN] or [Wireless Direct] tab in the Communication Settings.

    8. Confirm that [Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use] is checked, and click [Next].
    9. Select [Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended)], and click [Next].
    10. Enter an arbitrary name in [Printer name], and click [Next].
    11. Select [Do not share this printer], and click [Next].
    12. Click [Finish] .
