Why does the "No Response/Busy" message appear on my Brother machine?

The No Response/Busy message on your Brother machine indicates that the number you attempted to send to was busy or that the recipient's machine did not respond to your incoming fax.

This error will appear if your Brother machine does not have a dial tone.

Follow the steps below to solve the problem:

  1. Make sure the machine has a dial tone. (Click here to see how to verify if the Brother machine has a dial tone.)
  2. Make sure your telephone cord connections are correct.
    • One end of the telephone cord must be connected to the jack labeled LINE on the Brother machine.
Make sure the telephone cord is not connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack.
    • If you are using a standard analog telephone line, the other end of the telephone cord must be connected to a wall telephone jack.
    • If you are using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the other end of the telephone cord may be connected to a modem, interface box, phone adapter, splitter, etc.  This is determined by your VoIP provider.
  3. Check for a dial tone again. (Click here to see how to verify if the Brother machine has a dial tone.)

The problem may also be related to the receiving party's fax number.

We recommend you contact the other party and verify that they are not having issues with their fax machine or phone line.

If the other party indicates they are not experiencing problems, there may be a temporary issue with their line.  Try sending the fax at another time of day.
