When I try to send a fax, my Brother machine's LCD reads "Fax Reserved."

The Fax Reserved message will appear on the Brother machine's LCD when you're trying to send a fax while the machine's memory is full. The amount of memory used depends on the amount or type of data on the documents being faxed.

Memory is based on industry standard 5% coverage of letter size test document. If the document being scanned is more than 5% overage, it will use more memory. Documents with graphics and/or color will also use more memory.

If the Fax Reserved message appears on the Brother machine's LCD when you try to send a fax, follow these steps:

  1. Do one of the following:

    • If the message appears while the machine is scanning the first page of a fax, press Stop/Exit key to cancel the fax.

    • If the message appears while the machine is scanning a subsequent page, you can either press Black Start to transmit the pages that have been scanned so far or press Stop/Exit to cancel the fax.

  2. If Fax Storage is on, print the currently stored faxes or turn it off.

When Fax Storage is on, a copy of each received fax is stored in the machine's memory. This reduces the memory available for other functions. Fax Storage must be enabled if you want to use the Fax Forwarding, Fax Paging, Remote Retrieval features.

    • Print the stored faxes

If you want to continue using Fax Storage or are using the Fax Forwarding, Fax Paging, or Remote Retrieval features, follow these steps to print the stored faxes and clear the machine's memory:

      1. Press Menu.

      2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Fax and press OK.

      3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Remote Fax Opt and press OK.

      4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Print Fax and press OK.

      5. Press Black Start or Color Start.

      6. Press Stop/Exit

    • Turn Fax Storage off

If you do not want to use Fax Storage, Fax Forwarding, Fax Paging, or Remote Retrieval features, follow these steps to turn Fax Storage off.

      1. Press Menu

      2. Press the Up or Down arrow key and choose Fax and press OK.

      3. Press the Up or Down arrow key and choose Remote Fax Opt and press OK.

      4. Press the Up or Down arrow key and choose Fwd/Page/Store and press OK.

      5. Press the Up or Down arrow key and choose Off and press OK.

If there are currently faxes in memory, the machine will prompt you with the following message:

Erase all fax? 1. Yes 2. No.

      - If you do not want to print the stored faxes, press 1.

      - If you want to print the saved faxes, follow these steps:

      1. Press 2.

      2. Press Stop/Exit.

      3. Print the stored faxes.

      1. Press Stop/Exit.
