In Manual Mode, your Brother machine will not automatically answer the line.

Manual Mode requires you to answer every incoming call by the handset of a telephone that shares the line with your Brother machine.

Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jack labeled LINE on the Brother machine. Connect the other end of the cord to a telephone wall jack.

If the incoming call is a voice call, then complete the call as you normally would.

If you answer a call on an extension telephone and hear a beep every 3 seconds—indicating an automatic fax, or silence—indicating a manual fax, follow these steps to receive the fax:

1. Press *, 5, 1 on the telephone's dial pad.
   
   
2. Wait until you hear your Brother machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
   
   
3. Hang up the telephone's handset.
   
   
   • Your Brother machine will receive the fax.

If you answer a call on an external telephone connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack and hear a beep every 3 seconds—indicating an automatic fax, or silence—indicating a manual fax, follow these steps to receive the fax:

1. Press Black Start or Color Start on the machine.
   
   
2. Press 2 on the Brother machine.
   
   
3. Wait until you hear your Brother machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
   
   
4. Hang up the telephone's handset.
   
   
   • Your Brother machine will receive the fax.

To turn Easy Receive on, follow these steps:

1. Press Fax.
2. Press Menu.
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Fax. Press OK.
4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Setup Receive. Press OK.
5. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Easy Receive. Press OK.
6. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose On. Press OK.
7. Press Stop/Exit.

To put the machine in Manual Mode, follow these steps:

1. Press Fax.
2. Press Menu.
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Initial Setup. Press OK.
4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Receive Mode. Press OK.
5. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Manual. Press OK.
6. Press Stop/Exit.
