Why does my machine make a clicking, creaking, or popping noise when warming up or after the printer has printed?

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

  1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer and remove the paper from the paper tray.

  2. Check that the paper tray is set to the correct paper size. The paper tray length can be adjusted by releasing the blue locking tab found at the back of the paper tray (not all paper trays are equipped with a locking tab). Once the tab has been unlocked press the adjacent blue lever which allows you to increase or decrease the trays overall length. Once the correct paper size has been selected, move the blue locking tab into the locked position (only if your paper tray is equipped with a locking tab). The tray width can be adjusted by pressing the blue paper-guide release lever which will allow you to slide the side paper guide to fit the paper width.

If the paper guide is too tight against the rear edge of the paper stack, the machine may make a loud clicking noise since the gears that drive the tray up may be binding. Be sure to leave a very small gap at the rear edge of the paper stack before locking the tab.

  3. Insert the paper into the paper tray with the top edge of the paper towards the front of the paper tray and the print side down. Make sure that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark on the side paper guides.

  4. Press the Go button three times to print the Print Settings to test if the noise still occurs when printing.
    If the noise still occurs:

  1. Power off the printer using the power switch located on the right side of the printer. Open the front cover.

  2. With drum/toner unit removed  close the front cover.

  3. Power the printer back on. If the grinding or noise continues with drum/toner removed, the machine may require service.

If the problem continues and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

If you are out of warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

  4. If the noise does not occur when the drum/toner unit is removed from the printer, then the drum or toner unit may be the cause of the noise. With the toner and drum first insert the drum without the toner and close the front door.

  5. If the noise is present the drum will need to be replaced.  The drum is a consumable item that requires periodic replacement. The warranty period for the drum is 90 days from the original purchase date of the consumable, whichever occurs first.

  6. Install the toner cartridge back into the drum assembly and install this back into the machine.

  7. Press the Go button three times to print the Print Settings to test if the noise still occurs when printing. If the grinding noise still occurs, a brand new TN550 or TN580 toner cartridge may be necessary to stop the noise.
