Receive faxes when the Brother machine is in Manual Mode.

Your Brother machine's Manual Receive Mode completely disables automatic fax reception. You should only use Manual Mode if you do not receive many faxes.

Using Manual Mode will not affect your ability to send faxes.

Putting the machine in Manual Mode

To put the machine in Manual Mode, press Receive Mode until the LCD reads Manual.

Receiving faxes in Manual Mode

It is still possible to receive faxes in Manual Mode, but you must start the receiving process yourself.

  • If you know the incoming call is a fax and you are at the Brother machine, follow these steps to receive it:

    1. Press Hook on the machine's control panel.

You should hear a beep every 3 seconds (indicating an automatic fax) or silence (indicating a manual fax).

    2. Press Fax Start.

The machine will receive the fax.

  • If you answer a call on an extension telephone and hear a beep every 3 seconds (indicating an automatic fax), or silence (indicating a manual fax), follow these steps to receive the fax:

    1. Press *, 5, 1 on the telephone's dial pad.

    2. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).

    3. Hang up the telephone's handset.

The machine will receive the fax.

  • If you answer a call on an external telephone connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack and hear a beep every 3 seconds (indicating an automatic fax) or silence (indicating a manual fax), follow these steps to receive the fax:

    1. Press Fax Start.

    2. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).

    3. Hang up the telephone's handset.

The machine will receive the fax.
If the machine's Easy Receive function is on, then you do not have to press Fax Start on the Brother machine to receive a fax. Simply wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones, hang up the telephone's handset, and your machine should receive the incoming fax automatically.

Easy Receive

The Easy Receive feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine or connected to the Brother machine's EXT jack. The machine will automatically generate fax-receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.

The Easy Receive feature is turned on by default.

Follow these steps to adjust the Easy Receive setting:

  1. Press Menu/Set.

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Setup Receive. Press Menu/Set.

  3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Easy Receive. Press Menu/Set.

  4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose On.

  5. Press Menu/Set.

  6. Press Stop/Exit.
If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive off.
