When I try to scan to OCR I get an error message saying "This feature is not available because there is no OCR Software installed".

You will need to install the Paperport™ or PageManager software supplied on the CD with your machine, this will give you OCR capabilities.
If you no longer have the CD, please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us" with your Name and Address Details.
