How do I pull up the bobbin thread?

When making gathers or before free motion quilting, first pull up the bobbin thread as described below.

  1. Refer to How do I thread the machine (Threading the upper thread)? to thread the machine with the upper thread and thread the needle.

  2. Slide the bobbin cover latch to the right.

  4. Hold the bobbin with your right hand with the thread unwinding to the left, and hold the end of the thread with your left hand. Then, with your right hand, place the bobbin in the bobbin case.

  5. Lightly hold down the bobbin with your right hand (A), and then guide the end of the thread around the tab of the needle plate cover with your left hand (B).

Be sure to hold down the bobbin with your finger and unwind the bobbin thread correctly, otherwise the thread may break or the thread tension will be incorrect.

The order that the bobbin thread should be passed through the bobbin case is indicated by marks around the bobbin case. Be sure to thread the machine as indicated.

  6. While lightly holding down the bobbin with your right hand (A), guide the thread through the slit in the needle plate cover (B) and lightly pull it with your left hand (C).
The thread enters the tension spring of the bobbin case.

  7. Pass the bobbin thread through the slot.
Do not cut the thread with the cutter.

  8. While lightly holding the upper thread with your left hand, press  (Needle position button) twice to lower and then raise the needle.

The bobbin thread is looped around the upper thread and can be pulled up.

  9. Carefully pull the upper thread upward to pull out the end of the bobbin thread.

  10. Pull up the bobbin thread, pass it under the presser foot and pull it about 10 cm (4 inches) toward the back of the machine, making it even with the upper thread.

  11. Reattach the bobbin cover.Insert the tab in the lower-left corner of the bobbin cover, and then lightly press down on the right side.
