Print on labels and envelopes from the MP tray.
When the back output tray is pulled down, the printer has a straight paper path from the multi-purpose tray (MP tray) through to the back of the printer. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print on labels or envelopes.
Follow the steps below to print on labels or envelopes from the MP tray.
Step 1: Make sure that the paper you use is suitable for your Brother machine.
Step 2: Load labels or envelops in the MP tray of your Brother machine.
Step 3: Print on labels or envelopes from your computer.
Labels
Labels can be fed from the MP tray only.
Do not use labels that are damaged, curled, wrinkled or an unusual shape.
All labels used in this machine must be able to withstand a temperature of 392ºF (200ºC) for a period of 0.1 seconds.
- DO NOT feed partly used label sheets. The exposed carrier sheet will damage your machine.
- Label sheets should not exceed the paper weight specifications. For more information about the paper weight specifications, please refer to the FAQ "What kind of paper can I use?" Labels exceeding this specification may not be fed or printed properly and may cause damage to your machine.
- DO NOT reuse or insert labels that have previously been used or are missing a few labels on the sheet.
Envelopes
A suitable envelope should have edges with straight, well-creased folds. The envelope should lie flat and not be of baggy or flimsy construction.
- DO NOT use damaged, curled, wrinkled, irregularly shaped, extremely shiny or textured envelopes.
- DO NOT use envelopes with clasps, staples, snaps, tie strings, self-adhesive components, windows, holes, cutouts or perforations.
- DO NOT use envelopes that are of a baggy construction, not sharply creased, embossed (have raised writing on them) or pre-printed on the inside.
- DO NOT use envelopes that were previously printed by a laser printer.
- DO NOT use envelopes that cannot be arranged when stacked.
- DO NOT use envelopes that are made of paper that weighs more than the paper weight specifications for the printer.
- DO NOT use envelopes that are not straight or consistently square.
- DO NOT use envelopes with windows, holes, cut-outs or perforations
- DO NOT use envelopes with glue on surface as shown in figure below
- DO NOT use envelopes with double flaps as shown in figure below
- DO NOT use envelopes with sealing flaps that are not folded down when purchased
- DO NOT use envelopes with each side folded as shown in figure below
If you use any types of envelopes listed above, they may damage your printer. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.
Step 2: Load labels or envelops in the MP tray of your Brother machine.
Before loading, press the corners and sides of the envelopes to make them as flat as possible.
- Open the back cover (face-up output tray).
- Open the MP tray and lower it gently.
- Pull out the MP tray support (1) and unfold the flap (2).
- Put paper, labels or envelopes in the MP tray. Make sure:
- The number of envelopes in the MP tray does not exceed 3.
- The paper, labels or envelopes stay under the maximum paper mark (1).
- The side to be printed on must be face up.
Step 3: Print on labels or envelopes from your computer.
- Choose the following from the printer driver. (Click here to see how to change the printer driver settings.)
Paper Size......(1)
Media Type......(2)

and any other settings you may want to make.

- If envelopes are creased after they are printed, click here to learn how to solve envelopes creases.
- Envelope joints that are sealed by the manufacturer should be secure.
