What do the LED indications mean?

The technical term for the lights on the front of your Brother machine is Light Emitting Diodes (LED's).

This FAQ explains the meaning of those different LED indications.

When all the LEDs are off, the machine is in Power Off mode.
When the LEDs are on or flashing, an error may occur. Check the meaning of LED indication.

[LED indication]

The Error LED ( Error ) is off.
The Ready LED ( Ready ) is dimmed.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Sleep
The machine is in Sleep Mode. While the machine is in Sleep Mode, the Ready LED () is dimmed, but the machine can still receive data. Receiving a print job will automatically wake up the machine to start printing.
Deep Sleep
The machine is in Deep Sleep Mode, reducing more power consumption than Sleep mode. While the machine is in Deep Sleep Mode, The Ready LED () is dimmed, but the machine can still receive data. Receiving a print job will automatically wake up the machine to start printing.

The Error LED ( Error ) is off.
The Ready LED ( Ready ) is on.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Ready
The machine is ready to print.
Printing
The machine is printing.

The Error LED ( Error ) is off.
The Ready LED ( Ready ) will blink in 1 or 1.5 second intervals.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Please Wait
The machine is warming up.
Cooling Down
The inside of the machine is extremely hot. The machine will pause its current print job and go into Cooling Down mode. Wait until the machine is in Ready mode.
Receiving Data
The machine is either receiving data from the computer or processing data in the memory.
Data Remaining
There is remaining print data in the machine's memory. If the Ready LED () is blinking for a long time and nothing has printed, press to print the remaining data in the memory.

The Error LED ( Error ) will blink once in 1.5 seconds intervals.
The Ready LED ( Ready ) is on.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Toner Low
The toner cartridge will need to be replaced soon. Buy a new toner cartridge and have it ready for when Replace Toner is indicated.
If the printout is faint, hold the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly level with both hands and gently shake it from side to side several times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
Replace Toner (Continue mode)
The machine continues printing until the LED indicates Toner Ended.

The Error LED ( Error ) will blink once in 1.5 seconds intervals.
The Ready LED ( Ready ) is off.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Replace Toner (Stop mode)
Replace the toner cartridge with a new one.

No Toner
The toner cartridge isn't installed into the drum unit correctly when the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly is installed into the machine.

Toner Ended
Replace the toner cartridge with a new one.

The Ready LED ( Ready ) is off.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Cartridge Error
The drum unit and toner cartridge assembly is not installed correctly.

Cover is Open
Close the top cover of the machine.
Out of Memory
The machine memory is full and the machine cannot print full pages of a document.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Drum End Soon / Replace Drum
Replace the drum with a new one. Reset the drum counter.

Drum !
The corona wire needs to be cleaned.

No Drum
The toner cartridge is installed in the machine without the drum unit or the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly isn't installed in the machine.

The Ready LED ( Ready ) is off.

Meaning of LED Indication:

Jam Tray
Clear the paper jam.

Clear the paper jam.

Wrong Paper Type
Paper in the paper tray isn't suitable for printing. Put A4 or Letter size paper in the paper tray.

No Paper
Put paper in the paper tray you are using.
