I can receive a fax, but cannot receive a telephone call.
If your Brother machine is in FAX Only Mode, you cannot receive a telephone call.
You can change the Receive Mode from the Brother machine's control panel by choosing the Initial Setup and Receive Mode or pressing the Receive Mode key on the control panel. For details, please refer to the User's Guide. The latest User's Guides are available in the Manuals section.
You can check what receive mode is active on the LCD display.
