What do the LED indications mean?

The technical term for the lights on the front of your Brother machine is Light Emitting Diodes (LED's).
This FAQ explains the meaning of those different LED indications.

Control Panel Overview

  1. Error Indicator (with LED)

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Ready (USB connected)
    The machine is connected to a USB device and ready to scan.

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Ready (PC connected)
    The machine is connected to your computer and ready to scan.

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Scanning (Scan from PC)
    The machine is scanning from a computer.

All Pages Were Skipped

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • All Pages Were Skipped
    All scanned pages were skipped as blank pages. Press any button, and then do one of the following:
    • Place your document face down, top edge first, in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).
    • Set Blank Page Skip to Off.

Out of Memory (Scan to USB)

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Out of Memory (Scan to USB)
    The machine’s memory is full and the machine cannot scan the entire document. To clear the error, do one of the following:
    • Press any button.
    • Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet (electrical socket), and then plug the machine in again.
    To prevent the error, do one of the following:
    • Place fewer pages in the ADF.
    • Set a smaller resolution or file size.

Too Many Files on USB (Scan to USB)

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Too Many Files on USB (Scan to USB)
    Your machine cannot save to a USB flash drive if it contains too many files. Remove the USB flash drive, press any key, and then do one of the following:
    • Delete unused files or folders from the root folder of the USB flash drive, and then try again.
    • Use a USB flash drive that contains fewer than 999 files.

File Name Cannot Be Used (Scan to USB)

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • File Name Cannot Be Used (Scan to USB)
    The maximum sequential number for the file name has been reached. Press any button, and then do one of the following:
    • Delete unused files from the USB flash drive, and then try again.
    • Change the file name.

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Write Protect
    The media is write protected. To clear the error, press Stop.

    The media has been removed. To clear the error, press Stop.

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Authenticate Error (Scan to FTP)
    The FTP user name and password you entered are incorrect or not configured correctly. Confirm that the user name and password are configured or entered correctly, and then try again.

Server Time Out (Scan to FTP)

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Server Time Out (Scan to FTP)
    Check the following, and then try again:
    • The network settings are correct.
    • Your wireless access point/router is turned on.
    • The remote FTP server is turned on.
    • The name (or IP address) of the FTP remote server is correct.

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Sending Error (Scan to FTP)
    Check the following, and then try again:
    • You have writing permission for the destination folder.
    • The hard disk containing the destination folder is not full. (For example, if the hard disk is full, free some disk space, and then try again.)

    Check the following, and then try again:

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Sleep Time
    The machine is in Sleep Time. The machine acts as though it is turned off. Do one of the following to wake up the machine:
    • Open the ADF.
    • Load your document.
    • Press Power.
    The machine will enter Ready Mode.

Ejecting Paper / Stopped Ejecting

Meaning of the LED Indication:

  • Ejecting Paper
    If the machine stopped while ejecting the document, press Stop to continue ejecting the pages.
  • Stopped Ejecting / Stop Ejecting
    The machine has stopped ejecting the document or plastic cards. To continue ejecting, press Stop.

    Remote Setup is in process. To cancel Remote Setup, click Cancel in the Remote Setup window on your computer.
