My Brother machine has no dial tone.  What can I do?

If the Brother machine does not have a dial tone, follow these steps:

  1. Press the HOOK key on the control panel of the Brother machine and listen for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone, verify the telephone line cord is connected from the jack on the Brother machine labeled LINE directly to the wall telephone jack. If there are splitters, commshare devices, power strips or surge protectors between the wall jack and the Brother machine, please remove them. Removing the device that is connected between the wall jack and Brother machine assists in determining if the lack of a dial tone is related to the device or the Brother machine.

If you are using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a type of phone system that uses an internet connection instead of a traditional phone line, the telephone cord may be connected to a modem, interface box, phone adapter, splitter, or other device. This is determined by your VoIP provider. The telephone line must still be connected to the jack labeled LINE on the Brother machine.

If the line connection does not require any changes, continue to STEP 2.

If the line connection required a change, connect the telephone cord to the wall jack, press the HOOK key, and listen for dial tone.

    • If there is a dial tone, the issue is resolved.

    • If there is still no dial tone, go to STEP 2.

    • If you are using VoIP and there is still no dial tone, contact your VoIP provider for assistance.

  2. Press the STOP/EXIT key key and verify the date and time are displayed on the LCD.

    • If the LCD displays the date and time, go to STEP 3.

    • If the LCD displays an error message, refer to the solution that addresses the error message.

    • If the display is blank.

      1. Verify the power cord is connected to the AC power outlet. If the power cord is connected to a surge protector or power switch, remove the cord from the device and connect it directly to the outlet. Again, removing this device assists in determining if the blank LCD is related to the device or the Brother machine.

To protect your investment against power surges and lightning, Brother strongly recommends that you connect your machine to a surge protector. In particular we suggest that you use a surge protector that is compatible with both standard AC power cords and telephone line cords. Surge protectors equipped with telephone jacks will assist in insulating your machine from any power surge that might travel through a telephone line.

      1. If the display is still blank, try a different, known-working electrical outlet at your location.

If the display is still blank after testing on a known working electrical outlet, please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us".

  3. Remove the telephone line cord from the wall jack and connect a known-working extension telephone with a known working telephone line cord to the same wall jack. Lift the handset of the telephone and listen for a dial tone.

    • If the telephone does not have dial tone, the issue is related to the phone line or wall jack. Contact the local telephone company for assistance.

    • If the telephone has a dial tone, disconnect the telephone line cord from the telephone and connect it to the jack on the Brother machine labeled LINE. Press the HOOK key on the control panel and listen for dial tone.

If you do not hear a dial tone, please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us".
