How do I clear the message "No Paper" from the display?

The message "No Paper" will appear on the LCD display if the Brother machine does not detect paper in the paper tray(Tray#1 or Tray#2) or MP(Multi-purpose) Tray.

Resetting the Brother machine may resolve this issue. To reset the machine, unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet for approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

For MFC users :
The Brother machine can be powered OFF for up to 4 days without losing faxes in memory.

If the message "No Paper" continues to appear on the display follow the instructions listed below:

  1. When printing from Tray#1 or Tray#2 :
Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. Go to STEP2.
When printing from MP Tray :

    • Tray #2 is the optional LT-5300 paper tray.
    • The MP Tray is just above the main paper tray and can be accessed by opening the MP Tray door. To open, pull on either the left or right side of the front door by the circular cutout.

  2. While pressing the blue paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. If the back of the paper tray doesn't move, the tray lock button may be in the lock position; slide the lock button to the unlock position and pull out the back of the paper tray again. With the paper removed, you will see the LTR (letter) marking on the plastic plate on the bottom of the paper tray to indicate where the moveable rear guide (with protruding arrow) should be moved to for letter size paper. There is also a marking for legal size paper. Make sure the guides are set at the correct mark. Reload the paper in the paper tray. Make sure the moveable rear guide does NOT push tightly against the paper. It should be adjusted to the LTR (letter) or LGL (legal) position, depending on your paper size. If the moveable rear guide is pushed too tightly against the rear edge of the paper, the paper will get stuck in the tray and a loud plastic snapping noise may be heard when feeding paper.

  3. Move the tray lock button to the lock position (slide the button towards the paper).

  4. If there is no paper in the tray, reload the paper.

    When printing from Tray#1 or Tray#2 :
The tray can hold up to 250 sheets of 20lb paper. Do not overfill the tray. There is a maximum paper mark located on the top of the right and left paper guide. It looks like a V cut out in the plastic.

If you are using special paper and the machine has problems feeding it from the paper tray, try the paper again using the manual feed tray. Make sure you insert the paper far enough --about 1 inch- under the gray plastic bar in the MP Tray until it stops or it will not be fed and the machine will display the message "No Paper".

When printing from MP Tray :
Slide the side paper guides to fit the width of the paper.
The MP Tray can hold up to 50 sheets of 20lb plain paper. It can also hold up to 10 transparencies. It can also hold up to 3 envelopes. Do NOT overfill the MP Tray above the small protruding limiter tabs.

  5. Verify the correct size and type paper is being used:

  6. If there was already paper in the paper tray, make sure it is straight. If the paper is curled, you should straighten it. Sometimes it is helpful to remove the paper, turn the stack over and put it back into the paper tray. If there is too much paper in the tray, remove some.

  7. Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine and unfold the output paper tray support flap before using the machine. This flap is located on the front door release button.

  8. Insert a document into the ADF and press Copy. Then press Start. If the machine makes the copy, then the issue is resolved. If the "No Paper" message still occurs, then proceed to STEP 9.

  9. When printing from Tray#1 or Tray#2 :
If you are printing from a PC and using the paper tray, make sure that MP Tray is NOT selected in the application's print properties for Paper Source.
When printing from MP Tray :
If you are printing from a PC make sure that the MP Tray is selected in the application's print properties for Paper Source.

Please be aware that the setting in the printer driver will take priority over the setting made on the control panel.
