If the Brother machine does not have a dial tone, review the following information:
Step 1.
Verify the date and time is displayed on the LCD.
-
If the LCD displays the date and time, continue to Step 2.
-
If the LCD displays an error message, refer to FAQs & Troubleshooting for information on the error message that is appearing on the LCD and follow the appropriate FAQ to clear the message.
If the LCD is blank, verify the power cord is connected. If the power cord is not connected, plug the power cord directly into a known working outlet.
Then, listen for a dial tone. Click here to see the details of how to verify if the Brother machine has a dial tone.
If there is still no dial tone, continue to Step 2.
Step 2.
Verify the telephone line cord is directly connected from the jack on the Brother machine labeled LINE to the wall telephone jack. If there are splitters, commshare devices, power strips or surge protectors between the wall jack and the Brother machine, please remove them. Removing these devices assists in determining if the problem (no dial tone) is related to the Brother machine or another device on the line.
If you are using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) the telephone line may be connected to a modem, interface box, phone adapters, splitters, etc. However, the telephone line must be connected to the jack on the Brother machine labeled LINE.
*VoIP is a type of phone system that uses an internet connection, rather than a traditional phone line.
-
If the telephone line connection is correct, continue to Step 3.
-
If the telephone line connection required a correction, listen for a dial tone after connecting the line cord correctly. Click here to see the details of how to verify if the Brother machine has a dial tone.
- If there is a dial tone, the issue is resolved.
- If there is still no dial tone, continue to Step 3.
If you are using VoIP and there is still no dial tone we recommend you contact your VoIP provider for assistance.
Step 3.
Remove the telephone line cord from the wall jack and connect a known working extension phone with a known working telephone line cord to the same wall jack. Lift the handset of the extension phone and listen for a dial tone.
