FAQs & Troubleshooting

My Brother machine is dialing the wrong number or is not dialing the number I entered or I receive a busy signal or recording when trying to send faxes.

If your Brother machine consistently dials numbers other than the ones you have entered or you receive a busy signal or recording when trying to send faxes, you may have programmed a Dial Prefix on the machine. The Dial Prefix is a feature that automatically dials a user-defined number before every fax you send.

For example, if your telephone system requires you to dial 9 to access an outside line, then you can program the Dial Prefix feature to automatically dial 9 every time you send a fax.

To change or delete the prefix number programmed in your Brother machine follow these steps:

  1. Press image(Settings).

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Initial Setup.

  3. Press Initial Setup.

  4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Dial Prefix.

  5. Press Dial Prefix.

  6. Do one following:

    • If you want to use the Dial Prefix feature, Press ON. Go to Step 7.

    • If you do not want to use the Dial Prefix feature, press Off. Go to Step 8.

  7. Enter a prefix number (up to 5 digits) and press OK.

    • If your telephone system requires a timed break recall (hookflash), press "!" on the Touchscreen.

    • You cannot use "!" with any other numbers or characters.

    • (Canada only) If the pulse dialing mode is on, # and * are not available to use.

  8. Press image.
