FAQs & Troubleshooting

I keep getting the error message "Authenticate Err (Authentication error)".

This error message appears because of the following reasons.

  • The user name and password are not configured.
  • The user name and password you entered are not correct.
  • The date and time on your Brother machine does not match the date and time on the file server and authentication server.
  • The SNTP time server protocol is not configured correctly.

Check the following to resolve the issue:

  1. Check if the user name and password are configured or entered correctly.

    1. Print the network configuration report to obtain the IP address of the Brother machine. (Click here to see how to print the Network Configuration List.)

    2. Open web-based management on a computer connected to the same network as your Brother machine. To use web-based management, open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer) and enter in the IP address of the Brother machine from the Network Configuration List. (Ex: http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX - Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your machine)

If you have previously set a password, type it, and then press Next.

    3. Do one of the following.

      • If you scanned the document directly to an FTP server on your local network or on the intranet (Scan to FTP), or scanned the document directly to a CIFS server on your local server or on the intranet (Scan to Network), follow the steps listed below.

        1. Click Scan => Scan to FTP/Network Profile or Scan to FTP/SFTP/Network Profile.
        2. Click Profile Name of an FTP sever or a CIFS server where you want to scan the document. Go to STEP d.

          Scan to FTP/Network Profile

      • If you are using the Store Print Log to Network feature, click Administrator and then click Store Print Log to Network. Go to STEP d.

        Print Log to Network Settings

    4. Check if the user name and password are configured or entered correctly. If these are NOT configured, configure them.

    • If you are using the Scan to Network function or the Store Print Log to Network feature and the username is part of a domain, input the username in one of the following styles: user@domain or domain/user.
    • If you don't know the username and password for an FTP server or a CIFS server, consult the network administrator.
