FAQs & Troubleshooting

I'm using Windows XP. I can't scan or the scanner doesn't work properly after installing the WIA driver. What can I do?

To solve this problem, try using the Brother Patch tool following the instructions below.

Log on as an Administrator or as a user with administrative privileges. If you do not, you'll see the following error message when trying to run the patch file.
"You must be logged on as the Administrator. Code [x]"

  1. Please click here to download the patch file.
  2. The Brother End-User License Agreement will appear. If you agree to the terms, click I Accept.
  3. "File Download" will appear. Click SAVE.
  4. "Save as" will appear. From the "SAVE IN" drop down, click DESKTOP.
Then, click SAVE to save the patch file on your Desktop. This will begin the download of the patch tool on your Desktop.
  5. Once the download is complete, "Download complete" may appear. If it does appear, click OPEN. If it does not appear, go to the DESKTOP and double click BrRegDev.EXE (ZIP is on the icon and .exe may appear at the end of the name.)
  6. "ZIP Self Decompression" appears. Click DECOMPRESS.
  7. A message that the process was successful will appear. Click OK.
  8. Go to your Desktop and locate the icon named BrWIARegRepair.exe. This is the patch tool.
  9. Double click the BrWIARegRepair (".exe" may appear at the end of the name) icon.
  10. "Setup completed. Please click OK and then restart Windows for these settings to take effect. Code[x]" will appear. Click OK.
  11. Restart the computer.

If you see the "Error Code [3]" message when double clicking the extracted "BrWIARegRepair.exe" on Step 9, continue anyway and complete the steps. If you find that you still cannot use the scanner correctly after using this patch tool, the problem is caused by other reasons. In this case please refer to other "FAQ & Troubleshooting" for information.
