Unable to scan from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), but the machine will scan from the flatbed (Windows)

This issue is typically caused when the Auto Crop feature is enabled within the scan settings. This feature can only be used from the Flatbed, so the machine's scan function will bypass the ADF by default. To disable Auto Crop, complete the following steps:

Scanning from the ControlCenter Software

Follow the instructions for Home Mode or Advanced Mode depending on the interface that you are using.

Home Mode or Advanced Mode

ControlCenter4 Home Mode (Software Users):
  1. Open the ControlCenter.
    • Brother Utilities supported models
      1. Open Brother Utilities.
        • Windows 7 / Windows 10 / Windows 11
          Click Start or Start(Start) > (All Programs or All apps >) Brother > Brother Utilities.
        • Windows 8
          On the Start screen, click Start.
          If  is not  on the Start screen, right-click somewhere on an empty spot, and then click, All Apps from the bar.
          Click Brother Utilities.
      2. Select Scan.
      3. Click ControlCenter4.
    • Brother Utilities unsupported models
      Click Start(Start) > All Programs > Brother > [model name] > ControlCenter4.
  2. Click on the Scan tab.

  3. Select Custom.
  4. Click Custom Settings.
  5. Uncheck the Auto Crop setting.
    Uncheck the Auto Crop
  6. Click OK.
  7. Attempt to scan again using the ADF. You should now be able to scan.
ControlCenter4 Advanced Mode (Software Users):
  1. Open the ControlCenter.
    • Brother Utilities supported models
      1. Open Brother Utilities.
        • Windows 7 / Windows 10 / Windows 11
          Click Start or Start(Start) > (All Programs or All apps >) Brother > Brother Utilities.
        • Windows 8
          On the Start screen, click Start.
          If  is not  on the Start screen, right-click somewhere on an empty spot, and then click, All Apps from the bar.
          Click Brother Utilities.
      2. Select Scan.
      3. Click ControlCenter4.
    • Brother Utilities unsupported models
      Click Start(Start) > All Programs > Brother > [model name] > ControlCenter4.
  2. Click on Configuration > Button Settings > Scan.
  3. Click the type of Scan that you are trying to perform. (Image, OCR, E-mail, File)
  4. Uncheck the Auto Crop setting.
    Uncheck the Auto Crop
  5. Click OK.
  6. Attempt to scan again using the ADF. You should now be able to scan.

 

Scanning from the Scan Key on the Machine

Follow the instructions for Home Mode or Advanced Mode depending on the interface that you are using.

          If  is not  on the Start screen, right-click somewhere on an empty spot, and then click, All Apps from the bar.
          Click Brother Utilities.
      2. Select Scan.
      3. Click ControlCenter4.
    • Brother Utilities unsupported models
      Click Start(Start) > All Programs > Brother > [model name] > ControlCenter4.
  2. Click on the Device Settings tab.

  3. Select Device Scan Settings.
  4. Click on the tab for the type of Scan that you are trying to perform. (Image, OCR, E-mail, File)
  5. Uncheck the Auto Crop setting.
    Uncheck the Auto Crop
  6. Click OK.
  7. Attempt to scan again using the ADF. You should now be able to scan.

      3. Click ControlCenter4.

      Click Start(Start) > All Programs > Brother > [model name] > ControlCenter4.
  2. Click on Configuration > Button Settings > Device Settings > Device Scan Settings.
  3. Click on the tab for the type of Scan that you are trying to perform. (Image, OCR, E-mail, File)
  4. Uncheck the Auto Crop setting.

  5. Click Apply > OK.
  6. Attempt to scan again using the ADF. You should now be able to scan.

 

Scanning from Nuance™ PaperPort™

  1. Open PaperPort™.

    (Windows 7 / Windows 10 / Windows 11)
    Click Start or Start or start_win10(Start button) > (All Programs or All apps >) Nuance PaperPort > PaperPort.

    (Windows 8)
    1. On the Start screen, click DownArrow.
      If DownArrow is not on the Start screen, right-click somewhere on an empty spot, and then click, All Apps from the bar.
    2. Click PaperPort.
  2. Click the Scan Settings button.

  3. Make sure that Display scanner dialog box is checked.

  4. Click the Scan button.
  5. Uncheck the Auto Crop setting.

  6. Load the document in the ADF and click Start. The document should scan from the ADF.
