Out of Memory

The "Out of Memory" message means the memory capacity of the unit has been exceeded. The amount of memory used depends on the amount or type of data on the documents being faxed, copied or printed from the PC.

Memory is based on industry standard 5% page coverage of an 215.9 mm (8.5 in.) wide and 279.4 mm (11 in.) long test document. If the document being scanned has more than 5% coverage, it will use more memory. Documents with graphics and/or color will use more memory as well.

There are different times when the "Out of Memory" message may appear on your Brother machine's display, such as when you make multiple copies or print from a PC.

Check the solution applicable for your case to clear the message:

  • While scanning a subsequent page, press the Black (Mono) Start or Color (Colour) Start key to send the pages scanned so far, or press the STOP/EXIT key to cancel the operation.

How to change the Fax Storage setting to avoid the "Out of Memory" error message: (Available only for Brother machines with fax function.)

When Fax Storage is set to On, copies of all received faxes are stored in the memory. This uses up a portion of the memory available for other functions. The Fax Storage feature is utilized for Fax Forwarding, Paging, Fax Storage, and PC Fax Receive.

If you do not need these features, verify that Fax Storage is set to Off by doing the following:

  1. Press MENU and choose Fax => Remote Fax Opt => Fwd/Page/Store or Forward/Store.

  2. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Off and press the OK key.

If you have faxes stored in the memory, you will receive the following message:

Erase All Fax (Doc) ?  1. Yes 2. No
         --OR--
Print All Fax?    1. Yes 2. No

If you press 1(Yes), faxes in the memory will be erased or printed before the setting changes. If a backup copy has already been printed it will not be printed again.

If you press 2(No), faxes in the memory will not be erased or printed and the setting will be unchanged.

If the "Out of Memory" error continues to appear, or often appears:

Follow the steps below to check if there is a problem with the scanner. If there is a problem with the scanner, documents scanned into your Brother machine's memory may be scanned as black or blue images, which will use more memory.

  1. (For Brother machines with fax function)
Press the COPY key to illuminate it.

  2. Place a blank sheet of white paper face down on the flat scanner glass.

  3. Press the Black (Mono) Start key on the Brother machine.

The copies should be blank sheets of paper just like the original document.
If the copy is black or blue, or if the "Out of Memory" error continues to appear, please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us".
