Manual Feed

Manual was selected as the paper source when there is no paper in the MP tray.

The "Manual Feed" message appears when Manual is selected as the default paper source in the printer driver and there is no paper in the MP tray.

Please follow one of the steps below to clear the error.

 

NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product and may differ from your Brother machine.

 

CASE A: Print from the MP tray.

  1. Lift up the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face-down output tray, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the machine.

  2. Open the MP tray and lower it gently.

  3. Pull out the MP tray support (1) and unfold the flap (2).

  4. Follow the instructions applicable for your case.

    For Printing on plain paper, thin paper, recycled paper and bond paper:
    Put paper in the MP tray and make sure:
    • The side to be printed on must be face up with the leading edge (top of the paper) in first.
    • The paper guides touch the sides of the paper so it will feed properly.
    • The paper stays under the maximum paper mark (1).

    For printing on labels, envelopes and thick paper:
    Open the back cover (face-up output tray).
    Put labels, envelopes or thick paper in the MP tray. Make sure:

    • The number of envelopes in the MP tray does not exceed 3.
    • The side to be printed on must be face up.
    • The paper, labels or envelopes stay under the maximum paper mark (1).

  5. The document will be printed out. If the error message still continues, go to STEP 6.

  6. The size of the paper you put in the MP tray might be different from the size selected in the printer driver. Check the paper size.

    Make sure you use paper that meets Brother's recommended paper specifications.

  7. Load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting. The document will be printed out. If you want to change the paper source, go to STEP 2 in CASE B.

     

CASE B: Print from the Paper Tray (Tray 1 or Tray 2).

  1. Cancel the Print Job.


    Cancel the current job being printed:
    If you press Cancel while printing, the machine will immediately stop printing and will then eject the paper. The Ready and Error LEDs will blink or the LCD shows Cancel Printing as the job is being canceled.

    Cancel all the received jobs:
    To delete all jobs, press and hold Cancel for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up and then release it. The Ready and Error LEDs will blink or the LCD shows Cancel All Jobs as the job(s) is being canceled.
     

  2. Make sure the paper is not set to the MP Tray.

  3. Do one of the following:
     

    • If you want to change the tray temporarily for the next print only, go to OPTION 1.
    • If you want to change the default paper source (tray) for all print jobs, go to OPTION 2.

    OPTION 1: Changing the tray setting temporarily for the next print only

    For Windows Users / For Macintosh users

    For Windows Users:
    NOTE: The steps and screens may differ depending on the operating system being used.

    Windows PCL Printer Driver:

    1. Select Print menu from an application you are using.
      (The steps to select Print menu varies on an application you are using.)
    2. Click on Properties.
    3. Click the Basic tab and select Tray 1 or Tray 2 from the drop-down list for Paper Source.

    4. Click OK to send the print data to the machine.

    Windows BR-Script3 printer Driver:

    1. Select Print menu from an application you are using. (The steps to select Print menu varies on an application you are using.)
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the Paper/Quality tab and select Tray 1 or Tray 2 from the drop-down list for Paper Source.
    4. Click OK to send the print data to the machine.

    For Macintosh users:
    NOTE: The steps and screens may differ depending on the operating system being used.

    Mac CUPS Printer Driver:

    1. Open Print dialog.
      > Click here to see the details of how to open Print dialog.
    2. Select Standard or Default Settings for Presets.
    3. Select Print Settings from the print options pop-up menu.
    4. Select Tray 1 or Tray 2 for Paper Source. Click Print.

    1. Open Print dialog.

    2. Select Standard or Default Settings for Presets.
    3. Select Paper Feed from the pane pop-up menu.
    4. Select All pages From, or First page From and Remaining From.
    5. Select Tray 1 or Tray 2 from pop-up menu. Click Print.

    OPTION 2: Changing the default tray for every print

    For Windows Users/ For Macintosh users

    For Windows Users:
    NOTE: The steps and screens may differ depending on the operating system being used.

    Windows PCL Printer Driver:

    1. Open the Printing Preferences.
      > Click here to see the details of how to open the Printing Preferences.
    2. Click the Basic tab and select Auto Select or Tray 1 or Tray 2 from the drop-down list for Paper Source. The Auto Select setting will automatically pull paper from any paper source (paper tray or MP tray) with a defined paper size that matches your document. If you want to use Tray 1 or Tray 2 as the default paper source, select Tray 1 or Tray 2.

    3.  Click Apply to save your setting. Then, click OK.

    1. Open the Printing Preferences.

    2. Click the Paper/Quality tab and select Automatically Select, Auto Select, Tray 1 or Tray 2 from the drop-down list for Paper Source. The Automatically Select and Auto Select settings will automatically pull paper from any paper  source (paper tray or MP tray) that has a defined paper size that matches your document. If you want to use Tray 1 or Tray 2 as the default paper source, select Tray 1 or Tray 2.
    3. Click Apply to save your setting. Then, click OK.
