FAQs & Troubleshooting

I'm using MagicJack and am having problems sending or receiving faxes.

MagicJack is a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service that you can use with your high-speed internet connection.

Brother does not support the use of its fax machines and Multifunction Centers with MagicJack.

For information about connecting your Brother machine to MagicJack, click here.

If you want to use your Brother machine to send and receive faxes over MagicJack, we recommend you contact MagicJack and ask them which modem speed they recommend for faxing.

Set the Brother machine's modem speed to their recommendation by following these steps:

  1. Press Menu/Set, 2 (Fax), 0 (Miscellaneous), 1 (Compatibility).

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose the modem speed you want to use.

You can choose Basic or Normal (or High).

    • High sets the machine's modem speed at 33,600 bps.

    • Normal sets the machine's modem speed at 14,400 bps.

    • Basic sets the machine's modem speed at 9,600 bps.

High is only available for some models.

When you change the compatibility to Basic, the Brother machine's Error Correction Mode (ECM) is turned off when sending or receiving black and white faxes. ECM cannot be turned off for color faxing.

  3. Press Menu/Set.

  4. Press Stop/Exit.

  5. Try to send another test fax.

For additional information about using VoIP to send and receive faxes, see the Related FAQ's at the end of the page.
