Receive faxes when the Brother machine is in Manual Mode.

In Manual Mode, your Brother machine will not automatically answer the line.

Manual Mode requires you to answer every incoming call by lifting your Brother machine's handset (if applicable) or the handset of a telephone that shares the line with your Brother machine.

Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jack labeled LINE on the Brother machine. Connect the other end of the cord to a telephone wall jack.

If the incoming call is a voice call, then complete the call as you normally would.

Put the machine in Manual Mode:
  1. Press Fax.
  2. Press Menu/Set, 0 (Initial Setup), 1 (Receive Mode).
  3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to select Manual.
  4. Press Menu/Set.
  5. Press Stop/Exit.
Receive the fax:
  • If you answer a call on an extension telephone and hear a beep every 3 seconds-indicating an automatic fax, or silence-indicating a manual fax:

    1. Press *, 5, 1 on the telephone's dial pad.
    2. Wait until you hear your Brother machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
    3. Hang up the telephone's handset.
      Your Brother machine will receive the fax.

  • If you answer a call on the Brother machine's handset (if applicable) or an external telephone connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack and hear a beep every 3 seconds-indicating an automatic fax, or silence-indicating a manual fax:

    1. Press Black Start or Color Start on the machine.
    2. Press 2 on the Brother machine.
    3. Wait until you hear your Brother machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
    4. Hang up the handset.
      Your Brother machine will receive the fax.

If your Brother machine's Easy Receive function is on, then you do not have to press Black Start or Color Start on the Brother machine to receive a fax. Simply wait until you hear your Brother machine's receiving tones, hang up the telephone's handset, and your machine should receive the incoming fax automatically.

Turn Easy Receive on:
  1. Press Fax.
  2. Press Menu/Set, 2 (Fax), 1 (Setup Receive), 3 (Easy Receive).
  3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to select On.
  4. Press Menu/Set.
  5. Press Stop/Exit.
