If dust or bits of dirt collect in the race or bobbin case, the machine will not run well, and the bobbin thread detection function may not operate. Keep the machine clean for best results.
 

1. Press the  (Needle position button) to raise the needle.

    

2. Turn off the machine.

    

3. Unplug the power cord from the power supply jack on the right side of the machine.

    

4. Remove the needle.
   Refer to How do I change the needle?

    

5. Remove the presser foot and presser foot holder.
   Refer to How do I remove or attach the presser foot? and How do I remove or attach the presser foot holder?

    

6. Remove the flat bed attachment or the embroidery unit if either is attached.

    

7. Remove the needle plate cover.
   Grasp both sides of the needle plate cover, and then slide it toward you.

   If there is a screw in the needle plate cover, remove it using  the L-shaped (or disc-shaped) screwdriver before removing the needle plate cover.
   
8. Grasp the bobbin case, and then pull it out.

9. Use the cleaning brush or a vacuum cleaner to remove any lint and dust from the race and bobbin thread sensor and its surrounding area.

   Do not apply oil to the bobbin case.

    
10. Insert the bobbin case so that the mark on the bobbin case aligns with the mark on the machine.

    Align the and marks.

     

    Make sure that the indicated points are aligned before installing the bobbin case.

     

11. Insert the tabs on the needle plate cover into the needle plate, and then slide the cover back on.

    Tighten the screw firmly using the L-shaped (or disc-shaped) screwdriver if the screw was removed in the needle plate cover in step 7.
    
    • Never use a bobbin case that is scratched, otherwise the upper thread may become tangled, the needle may break or sewing performance may suffer. For a new bobbin case, contact your nearest Brother authorized service center.
    • Be sure that the bobbin case is correctly installed. Otherwise, the needle may break.
12. Install the flat bed attachment back in its original position.

     

13. Install the presser foot holder and presser foot.

     

14. Install the needle.
