FAQs & Troubleshooting

Receive faxes when the Brother machine is in Manual Mode.

Your Brother machine's Manual Receive Mode completely disables automatic fax reception. You should only use Manual Mode if you do not receive many faxes.

Using Manual Mode will not affect your ability to send faxes.

PUTTING YOUR BROTHER MACHINE IN MANUAL MODE

Follow the steps below to put the machine in Manual Mode:

  1. Press Menu.

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Fax.

  3. Press OK.

  4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Setup Receive.

  5. Press OK.

  6. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Receive Mode.

  7. Press OK.
If you cannot change the Receive Mode, make sure the Distinctive Ring or BT Call Sign or Fax Ability feature is set to Off.
(Click here to see how to set the Distinctive Ring to Off.)

  8. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Manual.

  9. Press OK.

  10. Press Stop/Exit.

The LCD will display the date, time, and "Mnl."

RECEIVING FAXES IN MANUAL MODE

It is still possible to receive faxes in Manual Mode, but you must start the receiving process yourself.

  • If you know the incoming call is a fax and you are at the Brother machine, follow the steps below to receive it:

    1. Do one of the following:

      • If your Brother machine has Hook on the machine's control panel:

Press Hook or lift the handset of the external telephone.

      • If not:

Lift the handset of the external telephone.

You should hear a beep every 3 seconds-indicating an automatic fax, or silence-indicating a manual fax.

    2. Press Black (Mono) Start or Color (Colour) Start on the Brother machine.

    3. Press 2 on the Brother machine.

The machine will receive the fax.

  • If you answer a call on an extension telephone and hear a beep every 3 seconds-indicating an automatic fax, or silence-indicating a manual fax, follow the steps below to receive the fax:

    1. Press *, 5, 1 (*, 9, 1 for New Zealand) on the telephone's dial pad.

    2. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).

    3. Hang up the telephone's handset.

The machine will receive the fax.

  • If you answer a call on an external telephone connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack (socket) and hear a beep every 3 seconds-indicating an automatic fax, or silence-indicating a manual fax, follow the steps below to receive the fax:

    1. Press Black (Mono) Start or Color (Colour) Start on the Brother machine.

    2. Press 2 on the Brother machine.

    3. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).

    4. Hang up the telephone's handset.

The machine will receive the fax.
If the machine's Easy Receive function is on, then you do not have to press Black (Mono) Start or Color (Colour) Start on the Brother machine to receive a fax. Simply wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones, hang up the telephone's handset, and your machine should receive the incoming fax automatically.

EASY RECEIVE

The Easy Receive feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine or connected to the Brother machine's EXT jack (socket). The machine will automatically generate fax-receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.

The Easy Receive feature is turned on by default.

Follow the steps below to adjust the Easy Receive setting:

  1. Press Menu.

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Fax.

  3. Press OK.

  4. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Setup Receive.

  5. Press OK.

  6. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Easy Receive or Fax Detect.

  7. Press OK.

  8. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose On or Off.

  9. Press OK.

  10. Press Stop/Exit.

If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive off.
