Install the starter ink cartridges

Follow the steps below to install the ink cartridges:

NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product, and may differ from your Brother machine.

Make sure you install the Starter Ink Cartridges or Introductory Ink Cartridges included with your machine first.

  1. Make sure the machine is turned on.
  2. Open the ink cartridge cover (1).

  3. Remove the orange protective part.
    Remove orange protective part

    Do not throw away the orange protective part. You will need it if you transport the machine.
    Keep the box and all packing materials in case you need them.

  4. Unpack the Magenta ink cartridge.
  5. Insert the Magenta ink cartridge into the correct slot.
    Make sure that the color of the ink cartridge matches the color of the ink slot.

  6. Gently push the area marked "PUSH" until the ink cartridge locks into place.

  7. Insert the Cyan and Yellow ink cartridges into the correct slot.
  8. Unpack the Black ink cartridge.
  9. Quickly shake the Black ink cartridge horizontally 15 times as shown.

  10. Insert the Black ink cartridge into the correct slot.
    Gently push the area marked "PUSH" until the ink cartridge locks into place.
  11. Again, make sure that the ink cartridge matches the ink slot color.
  12. Close the ink cartridge cover.

    The Cleaning process begins and will last about seven minutes. Do not turn off or unplug the machine.

  13. When cleaning is finished, press OK to print the quality check sheet.

    (For models with second paper tray)
    Make sure there is paper in Tray #1, the upper tray, when checking the print quality.

  14. Check the Print Quality Check Sheet and follow the machine's display instructions.
  15. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your machine's setup.
