The color of your printouts is not what you expected

The color of your printouts is not what you expected


Please check the following points to solve the problem:

NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product and operating system, and may differ from your Brother machine and operating system.

  1. Make sure toner save mode is off in the control panel or the printer driver. Click here to see the details of how to change the toner save mode setting.

  2. Make sure that the media type setting in the driver matches the type of paper you are using.

  3. Choose the Vivid option for Color Mode in the printer driver.

    For Windows printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click here to see the details of how to open Printing Preferences.
    2. Click the Basic tab and click Settings....

    3. Choose the Vivid option and click OK.

    4. Click Apply => OK.


    For Windows BR-Script printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click here to see the details of how to open Printing Preferences.
    2. Click Advanced....
    3. Choose Vivid for Color Mode in Printer Features, and click OK.

    For Mac OS X CUPS printer driver:

    [Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.x users]

    1. Open the Print dialog. Click here to see the details of how to open Print dialog.
    2. Choose Print Settings from the pane pop-up menu. Click the Advanced tab and choose the Vivid option.

    [Mac OS X 10.6.x or later users]

    1. Open the Print dialog. Click here to see the details of how to open Print dialog.
    2. Choose Color Settings from the pane pop-up menu.
    3. Choose Vivid option in Color Mode.

    For Mac OS X BR-Script printer driver:

    1. Open the Print dialog. Click here to see the details of how to open Print dialog.
    2. Choose Printer Features from the pane pop-up menu. Choose General 1 (Set 2 for Mac OS X 10.4) for Feature Sets, and choose Vivid for Color Mode.

  4. If colors appear in the printed gray areas, make sure Improve Gray Color mode of the printer driver is chosen.

    For Windows printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click the Basic tab and click Settings....
    2. Make sure there is a check in the Improve Gray Color check box.

    For Windows BR-Script printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click Advanced....
    2. Make sure Improve Gray Color in Printer Features is set to On, and click OK.

    For Mac OS X CUPS printer driver:

    [Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.x users]

    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Print Settings from the pane pop-up menu and click the Advanced tab.
    2. Make sure there is a check in the Improve Gray Color check box.

    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Color Settings from the pane pop-up menu and click Advanced Color Settings trianble mark.
    2. Make sure there is a check in the Improve Gray Color check box.

    For Mac OS X BR-Script printer driver:

    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Printer Features from the pane pop-up menu and choose General 1 or General 2 (Set 2 for Mac OS X 10.4) for Feature Sets.
    2. Make sure there is a check in the Improve Gray Color check box.

  5. If shaded areas look dull, disable the Improve Gray Color mode of the printer driver.

  6. If you use a Windows printer driver or Mac OS X CUPS printer driver, adjust color settings by using the custom setting in the printer driver. Click here to see the details of how to adjust color settings.

  7. Perform the calibration. Click here to see the details of how to carry out calibration.

  8. If a printed black graphic is too light, choose Enhance Black Printing mode in the printer driver.

    For Windows printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click the Basic tab and click Settings....
    2. Check the Enhance Black Printing option, and click OK.

    For Windows BR-Script printer driver:

    1. Open Printing Preferences. Click Advanced....
    2. Choose On for Enhance Black Printing in Printer Features, and click OK.

    For Mac OS X CUPS printer driver:

    [Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.x users]

    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Print Settings from the pane pop-up menu and click the Advanced tab.
    2. Check the Enhance Black Printing option.

    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Color Settings from the pane pop-up menu and click Advanced Color Settings trianble mark.
    2. Check the Enhance Black Printing option.

    For Mac OS X BR-Script printer driver:
    1. Open the Print dialog. Choose Printer Features from the pane pop-up menu and choose General 2 (Set 3 for Mac OS X 10.4) for Feature Sets.
    2. Check the Enhance Black Printing option.

  9. Shake all four toner cartridges gently.

  10. Wipe the scanner windows with a dry lint-free soft cloth. Click here to see the details of how to clean the inside of the machine.

  11. The toner cartridge may be damaged. Put in a new toner cartridge as follow:

    1. Click here to print the chart. [345KB/ PDF]
    2. Compare your printed document with the printed chart to identify the color causing the problem.
    3. Replace the toner cartridge of the color. Click here to see the details of how to replace the toner cartridge.

  12. The drum unit may be damaged. Put in a new drum unit. Click here to see the details of how to replace the drum unit.

  13. The belt unit may be damaged. Put in a new belt unit. Click here to see the details of how to replace the belt unit.
