FAQs & Troubleshooting |
Guidelines for configuring your Brother machine on a wireless network
- Finding your wireless router/access point's Network Name (SSID) and Network Key (Password)
- Support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSID/ESSID
- Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
- Temporarily changing your firewall/security settings to allow network connection
- Assigning IP addresses to your Brother machine
-
Advanced settings of your wireless router/access point
If you have set up your Brother machine but cannot print or scan
- Make sure the machine uses the latest driver. If you have updated your operating system, download the latest driver from:
Windows: support.brother.com/windows
- If you have changed your network environment (moved house or changed your wireless router/access point), you must set the machine up again.
- Make sure your machine uses the latest firmware. Go to your model's Downloads page on support.brother.com and download the Firmware Update Tool.

1. Finding your wireless router/access point's Network Name (SSID) and Network Key (Password)
-
See the side of your wireless router/access point. Example:
- See the documentation provided with your wireless router/access point.
- The initial Network Name could be the manufacturer's name or the model name.
-
If you still cannot find this information, consult the manufacturer of your wireless router/access point, your system administrator, or Internet provider. Brother cannot provide this information.
2. Support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSID/ESSID
Your Brother machine may not support a 5 GHz SSID/ESSID. Make sure your wireless access point/router is set to 2.4 GHz or 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz mixed mode. For more information, see the documentation provided with your wireless router/access point.
3. Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
Your wireless router/access point may have the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) functionality. If it does, you may see this symbol displayed on your router/access point:
If your wireless router/access point has the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), you can connect your Brother machine to your wireless network without a computer. Make sure only one wireless router/access point within range has the WPS method active.
If you do not know how to use your wireless router/access point with WPS, see the documentation provided with your wireless router/access point, consult the manufacturer of your wireless router/access point, or your network administrator.
4. Temporarily changing your firewall/security settings to allow network connection
Your computer's firewall/security software may prevent the network connection from being established. If you receive firewall-related notifications, we recommend temporarily changing the security settings on your computer to establish the connection.
If the Brother machine works correctly after disabling the firewall, this means the firewall on your computer is rejecting the necessary network connection. In this case, either disable the Firewall on your computer whenever you need to use your Brother machine network or leave the firewall enabled and adjust the firewall settings by allowing the following internal/external ports:
- UDP: 54925
- UDP: 137
- UDP: 161
IMPORTANT
- Before disabling the firewall, make sure the changes you want to make are suitable for your network. Brother will not take any responsibility for any consequences of disabling the firewall.
- When finished, make sure to turn the firewall on again.
5. Assigning IP addresses to your Brother machine
-
Assigning static IP addresses
Before your assign an IP address to your Brother machine manually using Static Mode, make sure the IP address:- Is outside the range of the IP address that may be assigned as a dynamic address by the DHCP server.
- Is not already assigned to another device on your network.
- Is on the same network as your computer and the wireless router/access point.
-
Assigning IP addresses automatically
The IP address can be automatically configured only if your wireless router/access point supports the DHCP server function. For more information, see the documentation provided with your wireless router/access point.
6. Advanced settings of your wireless router/access point
Some settings of your wireless router/access point may prevent your Brother machine from communicating with your computer. If any of the following settings are enabled, we recommend disabling them (for more information, see the instructions supplied with your wireless router/access point):
-
Multiple Network Names (SSIDs)
Use the same Network Name (SSID) to configure your wireless computer and Brother machine as used by your wireless router/access point. If your devices are connected to different SSIDs, they will not be able to communicate with each other on the same wireless network if they use different authentication and encryption methods.
Example:
-
MAC Address Filtering
If you are using MAC address filtering in the wireless router/access point, you need to configure the MAC address of your Brother machine. You can find your machine's MAC address by printing the Network Configuration Report.
> Click here to see how to print the Network Configuration Report.
-
Stealth Mode
Wireless routers/access points do not broadcast the Network Name (SSID) in Stealth Mode. You may need to disable Stealth Mode to connect to the wireless network.
