FAQs & Troubleshooting

Why do I hear an echo when I use the speaker phone on the cordless handset?

If you hear an echo when using the cordless handset's speaker phone feature, connect another, known-working telephone on the line the cordless handset is using to test the line.

  1. If you hear an echo on all of the phones at your location, you must contact your local telephone company to report the problem and request assistance.

    - If the echo only occurs on the Brother machine's cordless handset, go to STEP 2.

  2. Adjust the Brother machine's Echo Control setting by following these steps:

    1. Press the MENU key.
    2. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose General Setup.
    3. Press the OK key.
    4. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Echo Control.
    5. Press the OK key.
    6. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Level 4.
    7. Press the OK key.
    8. Press the STOP/EXIT key.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 3.

  3. Other products that use the 5.8 GHz band, such as wireless modems and other cordless phones, can interfere with the use of cordless handset. Relocate the Brother machine so that it is not near any such devices.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 4.

  4. Bring the cordless handset closer to the Brother machine.

The cordless handset's operational range may be affected by many environmental conditions. Structures, such as walls; windows; and doors, as well as furnishings; construction materials; and building systems, may have a dramatic impact on the cordless handset's operational range.

To improve communications, try relocating the Brother machine to shorten the direct path between it and the cordless handset.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 5.

  5. Verify that there are no electronic devices between the Brother machine and the cordless handset.

Microwaves work on the same frequencies as the cordless handset. If the Brother machine is on when the microwave is running, it is normal to experience static at that time.

Do not plug the Brother machine into the same outlet as a microwave, or into an outlet near a microwave.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 6.

  6. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or digital telephone connections tend to have more static, noise or interference than a standard analog telephone line.

If you are using VoIP and hear an echo on your Brother machine's cordless handset, contact your VoIP service provider for assistance.

    - If you are not using VoIP, go to STEP 7.

  7. Avoid areas of interference.

Unlike a corded phone, the Brother machine's cordless handset transmits and receives through radio frequencies. There may be certain areas in the environment where you use the cordless handset that will not allow perfect transmission.

If the cordless handset works properly when you walk to a different area, there is nothing wrong with the cordless handset.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 8.

  8. If your Brother machine is plugged into a modem or surge protector, plug it directly into a different outlet by itself with no modem or surge protector for testing purposes.

If the cordless handset works properly, either the modem or surge protector is causing the problem and needs to be replaced.

    - If the problem continues, go to STEP 9.

  9. Plug in the Brother machine in another room without the modem or surge protector.

    - If that resolves the issue, the power source is causing static or interference.
