What do the indicator lights mean?

The indicators light and blink to indicate the printer's status.  The following symbols are used in this FAQ to explain the meaning of the different indicator colors and patterns.

 

green is lit or orange  is lit or red  is lit or blue  is lit

Can't Enter Template Mode Template transition error Transfer the template from the device to the printer.
Network Setting Error Network setting error Confirm that the SSID and password are correct, and then connect again.
Invalid SSID SSID input/setting outside of allowable range error Enter at least one character.
Invalid Password Password input/setting outside of allowable range error Enter eight or more characters for the password.
Incorrect Password Incorrect password error Enter the correct password.

orange  is lit

The DK Roll Compartment Cover is open.

System OFF mode

orange is flashing

(Once every 0.5 second)

Cooling Cooling mode Wait approximately 10 minutes, and then try printing again.
red  is lit

Boot mode Turn off the printer and then turn it on again. If the problem still occurs, contact Brother Customer Service.

red is flashing

(Once every 1 second)

Roll Paper Cannot Be Fed Media end error

Replace the DK Roll with a new one. If there is sufficient roll remaining, install the DK Roll correctly.

Roll Paper Cannot Be Fed Feed error

Insert the end of the DK Roll correctly.

No Roll No media error

Load the DK Roll.

Wrong Roll Type Wrong media error

・For 2-color printing, make sure that the Black/Red on White DK roll is installed.
 

・If you use the Black/Red on White DK roll for monochrome printing, you need to activate the [Two-color Mode]/[2-color [Black/Red]] settings on each application. For details, see the FAQ "2-color Printing is not possible".
 

・Load the correct DK Roll.

Cover Open Cover open error

Close the DK Roll Compartment Cover correctly.

Communication cmd Error Communication error ・Transfer of the data failed. When sending a template as a .blf file, the model name in the file is different.
→ Check the data and the connection status between the printer and the computer.

・The wireless LAN or Bluetooth® connection was interrupted. Turn off the printer, and the turn the printer on again.

・For Windows
If this error occurs during 2-color printing, click the [Print] button in P-touch Editor, and then change [Output] to [Standard] in the [Print] dialog box that appears.
If [High Resolution] is selected, you cannot use 2-color printing.
Data Too Large Memory full error Reduce the size of the print data or delete unnecessary files, and then transfer the data again.
USB host memory full error Try scanning the barcode after a while again.
BLF file - Incorrect BLF file error Confirm that the model supports .blf files, and then transfer the data again.
JPEG file - Incorrect JPG file error Confirm the size of .jpg files, and then transfer the data again.
Database Search Error Database search error

・There is no database with the specified number. Specify a correct number.


・The search for a template with a linked database fails.
→ Search again.

Incorrect Template Selected No template error

・There is no template with the specified number. Specify a correct number.


・When printing a template, the specified template does not exist.
→ Select the correct template, and then print again.

WPS Timeout Access point search error

・The access point could not be found.
→ Try to connect again.


・An access point for establishing a connection could not be specified.
→ Confirm the WPS setting environment (distance between the access point and the printer, presence of obstructions, and so on) for the access point, and then configure the WPS settings for the printer again.

Wireless LAN Setting Error Access point connection error If you are using two or more access points, reduce the number of access points to one, and then connect the printer again.
Access point setting error

Set the encryption method of the access point to a method other than WEP, and configure the wireless LAN settings using WPS.

For more information about setting the encryption method of the access point, see the instructions provided with your access point.
WPS Invalid Data Received Security error Configure the wireless settings using WPS again.
Data Updating Error Data update incomplete error Confirm the status of the network connection, and then update the data again.
Battery Empty Charging required error Connect the AC adapter to the printer.

red is flashing

(0.9 second off + 0.3 second flashing)

Cutter Error Cutter error

Do not open the DK Roll compartment cover when the cutter is operating.

To clear this error, press any button.
USB Device Non-compliant USB host excessive power supply error/USB host non-compliant device connection error

Replace the USB host with another USB host that is compliant.

This printer is compatible with HID-class USB devices.
USB HUB Non-compliant USB hub connection error Disconnect the USB hub.
Mass Storage Error Mass storage error The file system becomes corrupted or a file is copied while a mass storage file is being processed. Turn off the printer and then turn it on again.

red is flashing

(Once every 0.3 second)

System Error System error Turn off the printer and then turn it on again. If the problem still occurs, contact Brother Customer Service.
