How can I connect the printer to my mobile device via Wi-Fi® ?

  • To connect to a wireless network, you must use the Li-ion battery (PA-BT-003) and AC adapter (Optional: PA-AD-600).
  • To print wirelessly using iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, etc. (hereinafter referred to as “Apple device”), you must use AirPrint.
  • AirPrint (compatible with Apple device) is able to print the picture, PDF file and etc.

Choose a connection method to wirelessly connect the printer and your Apple device.
>> If you have a wireless router/access point

>> If you do not have a wireless router/access point

 

If you have a wireless router/access point

Connect using a wireless router/access point (Infrastructure mode)

 

If you have a wireless router/access point, do the following:
(e.g. RJ-2150)
Mobile Device - Router - Printer

  1. Connect your printer to your wireless router/access point.
     
  2. Connect your mobile device to the same wireless router/access point. (You can skip this step if your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi® network.)

  3. You can now print from your mobile device wirelessly.
     

 

If your wireless router/access point supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™), do the following:

 

If you cannot use the wireless router/access point, go to "Connect the printer and the wireless router/access point using your computer".

Connect using a wireless router/access point (WPS)

 

  1. Confirm that your wireless router/access point has the WPS symbol. Place the printer close to the wireless router/access point.

  2. Turn on the printer.
    On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Down arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
     
  3. Press the WPS button on your wireless router/access point.
     
  4. Press the [ Down arrow ] button to select the [WPS] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
     
  5. Select [Start], and then press the [OK] button.
     
  6. When the connection is established, the WLAN icon (Wi-Fi) appears on your printer's LCD.
    If the WLAN icon (Wi-Fi) on your printer's LCD does not appear
    Go to "Connect the printer and the wireless router/access point using your computer".
     
  7. Connect your mobile device to the wireless router/access point.  (You can skip this step if your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi network.)
    1. Tap [Settings] - [Wi-Fi] on the mobile device, and slide the toggle button to activate Wi-Fi.
    2. Select the SSID (Network Name) of the wireless router/access point that you connected to in step 6, and then enter the password. The connection between your mobile device and the wireless router/access point will be established.
  8. Start the application in your mobile device, and tap the settings icon.
     
  9. Select the printer you use from the list of printers.
     
  10. You can now print from your mobile device wirelessly.

Connect the printer to the wireless router/access point using your computer

Before you proceed, make sure your computer is equipped with a Wi-Fi interface that is connected to a wireless network. If it is not, the computer will not be able to connect to your printer wirelessly.

 

  1. Connect your computer to your wireless router/access point.
     
  2. Connect your Brother printer to the same wireless router/access point.
     
  3. Connect your printer and computer.
     
  4. Connect your mobile device to the same wireless router/access point. (You can skip this step if your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi network.)
     
  5. Connect your mobile device and printer.

    Before you begin, confirm the SSID (Network Name) and the password (Network Key) of your wireless router/access point.

    1. Download the printer driver from the [Downloads] section of this website.
       
    2. Double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation.
       
    3. Click [Next].

    4. When the screen for selecting the connection method appears, select [Wireless Network Connection], and then click [Next].

    5. Read the Confirmation and then click [Next].

    6. Select [Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer] and then click [Next].

    7. Select [Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation. (Recommended)], and then click [Next].

    8. Prepare the USB cable, select [Yes, I have a USB cable to use for installation], and then click [Next]. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    9. The wizard will search for wireless networks available to your printer. 
       
    10. Select the SSID (Network Name) noted beforehand, and then click [Next].

    11. Type in Network Key (Password), and then click [Next].

    12. Make sure that the SSID (Network Name) is correct, select [Yes, I want to connect the device to this wireless network.] and then click [Next].

    13. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.

    14. When the installation is complete, and then click [Finish] to close the installer window.

    15. When the printer is connected to your wireless router/access point, the WLAN icon (Wi-Fi) appears on your printer's LCD.
       
    16. Connect your mobile device to the wireless router/access point.  (You can skip this step if your device is already connected to a Wi-Fi network.)
      1. Tap [Settings] - [Wi-Fi] and slide the toggle button to activate the Wi-Fi function.
      2. Select the SSID you connected to in step j. Your device and the wireless router/access point will be connected.
    17. Start the application in your mobile device, and tap the settings icon.

    18. Select the printer you use from the list of printers.
       
    19. You can now print from your mobile device wirelessly.

If you do not have a wireless router/access point

Connect the printer to your computer using Wireless Direct

 

Download the printer driver and the Printer Setting Tool from the [Downloads] section of this website, install it in advance.

 

  1. Confirm the Wireless Direct settings of the printer.
    Using your printer for computers
    1. On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Down arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    2. Press the [ Down arrow ] button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the [OK] button.
    3. Select [Direct], and then press the [OK] button. The Wireless Direct icon (Wireless Direct) appears on the LCD.
    4. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer and click the [Communication Settings] button.
    5. Confirm that [Wireless Direct] is selected for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab. For more information, see "Using the Communication Settings (for Windows)".
  2. Turn the printer on.
    On your printer, press the [Menu], [ Down arrow ] button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the [OK] button. Set [On/Off] to [On].
     
  3. Use your computer or mobile device to select the SSID (Network Name) of your Printer. If required, enter the password.
     
    • SSID (Network Name): DIRECT-[the last five digits of the serial number]_[model name]
    • Password: Refer to the table below.
      RJ-2150 215[the last five digits of the serial number]
      RJ-2140 214[the last five digits of the serial number]
      RJ-2050 205[the last five digits of the serial number]
    • If you cannot find the serial number label, see "Where can I find my Brother printer's serial number?".
    • If you set the password with the communication settings, enter the password.
  4. Connect your mobile device to the printer.
    1. Tap [Settings] - [Wi-Fi] on the mobile device, and slide the toggle button to activate Wi-Fi.
    2. Select the SSID (Network Name) of the printer from the displayed. The connection between the mobile device and the printer is established.
  5. You can now print from your mobile device in Wireless Direct.
