Your Brother machine's Manual Receive Mode completely disables automatic fax reception. You should only use Manual Mode if you do not receive many faxes.

1. Press (Settings).
   
   
2. Press All Settings.
   
   
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Fax.
   
   
4. Press Fax.
   
   
5. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Receive Mode.
   
   
6. Press Receive Mode.
   
   
7. Press Manual.
   
   
8. Press (Home).

RECEIVING FAXES IN MANUAL MODE

It is still possible to receive faxes in Manual Mode, but you must start the receiving process yourself.

• If you know the incoming call is a fax and you are at the Brother machine, follow these steps to receive it:
  
  
  1. Lift the handset of the external telephone or press (Fax) and then press Hook. You will hear fax tones (short repeating beeps) or silence.
     
     
  2. Press Fax Start and choose Receive. The machine will receive the fax.
  
  
• If you answer a call on an extension telephone and hear fax tones (short repeating beeps) or silence, follow these steps to receive the fax:
  
  
  1. Press *, 5, 1 (*, 9, 1 for New Zealand) on the telephone's dial pad.
     
     
  2. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
     
     
  3. Hang up the telephone's handset. The machine will receive the fax.
  
  
• If you answer a call on an external telephone connected to your Brother machine's EXT jack (socket) and hear fax tones (short repeating beeps) or silence, follow these steps to receive the fax:
  
  
  1. Press Fax Start and choose Receive.
     
     
  2. Wait until you hear the machine's receiving tones (chirping sounds).
     
     
  3. Hang up the telephone's handset. The machine will receive the fax.

EASY RECEIVE or FAX DETECT

The Easy Receive or Fax Detect feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine or connected to the Brother machine's EXT jack (socket). The machine will automatically generate fax-receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.

Follow these steps to adjust the Easy Receive or Fax Detect setting. The default setting is On.

1. Press (Settings).
   
   
2. Press All Settings.
   
   
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Fax.
   
   
4. Press Fax.
   
   
5. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Setup Receive.
   
   
6. Press Setup Receive.
   
   
7. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
   
   
8. Press Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
   
   
9. Press On (or Off).
   
   
10. Press (Home).
