FAQs & Troubleshooting

I cannot print using my Brother machine on a wired network (Windows/macOS)

  1. Are there any remaining print jobs in the print queue?
  2. Is your Brother machine turned on?
  3. Does your Brother machine's screen display any errors?
  4. Verify the connection between your Brother machine and your computer.
  5. Is your Brother machine's firmware updated to the latest version?
  6. Have you performed the additional checks?

Note: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product and operating system, and may differ from your Brother machine and operating system.

 

1. Are there any remaining print jobs in the print queue?

If there are any remaining print jobs in the print queue, delete them.

Try to print again. If you still cannot print, go to the next section.

 

 

2. Is your Brother machine turned on?

If the machine's screen is blank, the machine is not turned on or is in Sleep Mode.

 

  1. Press any button on the machine to see if it wakes from Sleep Mode.
  2. If it does not, make sure the machine is connected to a working AC power outlet (electrical socket) and turn any power switches to ON.
  3. If the machine is not turned on even though you tried to turn it on and off, contact Brother customer service from "Contact Us".
  4. If the machine is turned on, but you still cannot print, go to the next section.

 

3. Does your Brother machine's screen display any errors?

If the machine's screen displays printing errors, such as "Paper Jam" or "Ink/Toner Empty", the machine may not allow you to print. Clear the errors first, and then try to print.

If your machine displays no errors, but you cannot print, go to the next section.

 

 

4. Verify the connection between your Brother machine and your computer.

  1. Turn your Brother machine off. Wait a few seconds and then turn it on again.
    Wait at least three minutes for the machine to join the network. If you still cannot print, go to the next step.
  2. Make sure that the network cable is securely connected and the Link LED of the router or hub is ON (lit or blinking).

    • If the Link LED is lit or blinking
      Your machine and router or hub are connected.
      Restart the router or hub.
    • If the Link LED is not lit or blinking
      Your machine and router or hub are not connected. Use a different network cable or connect the network cable to a different port on the router or hub. If the Link LED is still not lit or blinking, contact the manufacturer of the router or hub.
      If the Link LED is now lit or blinking, your machine and router or hub are connected. Restart the router or hub.

If you still cannot print, go to the next section.

 

 

5. Is your Brother machine's firmware updated to the latest version?

Make sure your Brother machine uses the latest firmware.

To update the machine's firmware, see how to update the Firmware for your Brother machine.

 

If you still cannot print, go to the next section.

 

 

6. Have you performed the additional checks?

> 6-1. Is an unnecessary copy of your Brother machine's icon listed in "Devices and Printers" (For example: "Brother [model name] (Copy 1)")?

6-1. Is an unnecessary copy of your Brother machine's icon listed in "Devices and Printers" (For example: "Brother [model name] (Copy 1)")?

A copy of your Brother machine with the same name may have been created if you:

  • Changed the USB port on the computer connected to the Brother machine.
  • Installed the same printer driver multiple times.

When printing, always select a working printer driver. We also recommend deleting unnecessary printer icons.

If you are not sure which printer icon to select, check which printer driver is working:

(Windows 11)

  1. Turn the Brother machine on. If any other machines are connected, only turn the Brother machine on that you want to use.
  2. Click Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select your Brother machine.
  4. Make sure the Brother machine's status.
    If the status is idle, it means the printer driver is working correctly. Select this printer driver when printing.

    (Optional) To change the printer name, do the following:

    1. Click Printer properties.
    2. Change the printer name in the Printer Properties window, and click OK.

    To delete an unnecessary printer, select your Brother machine and click Remove.

    When you have completed the checks in this section, try to print. If you still cannot print, go to Step 6-2.

 

(Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10)

  1. Turn your Brother machine on. If any other machines are connected, turn those machines off.
  2. Open the "Devices and Printers" folder:
    (Windows 8 or later)
    1. Open the Control Panel. (Click here to see how to open the Control Panel.)
    2. Click Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.

    Click Start > Devices and Printers.
  3. Hover the cursor over the printer icon until the printer status pop-up appears.

    If the status is Offline, the printer driver is not working. Select the printer driver that status is not Offline.

    (Optional) To change the printer name in Windows 7 or later, do the following:

    1. Right-click the printer icon.
    2. Click Printer Properties.
    3. Change the printer name in the Printer Properties window, and then click OK.
  4. If you want to always print using this printer, right-click the printer icon and select Set as default printer. The check mark appears on the printer icon and this printer will be selected automatically the next time you print.

    To delete an unnecessary printer icon, right-click the icon and select Remove device.

    When you have completed the checks in this section, try to print. If you still cannot print, go to the next section.
6-2. Use the Network Connection Repair Tool

Use the Network Connection Repair Tool, which can automatically locate and update your Brother machine's IP address within your printer driver.

  1. Download the Network Connection Repair Tool.
    > Click here to download the Network Connection Repair Tool in the Downloads section.
  2. Run the Network Connection Repair Tool.

If you cannot select your Brother machine in the Network Connection Repair Tool, you need to download and install the latest Full Driver & Software Package and make sure you select the wired network connection type during the installation.

Try to print. If you still cannot print, go to the next section.

 

6-3. Uninstall and reinstall the Brother driver
  1. Uninstall the Brother driver. (Click here to see how to uninstall the driver.)
  2. Download the latest Full Driver & Software Package and reinstall it. The installation instructions are available on the download page.

    If a firewall is detected, select Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation (Recommended). You may need to click Next to continue.

    (For Antivirus Software Users)
    If you are using antivirus software, a warning dialog box may appear during the installation. Select Allow to continue.
    If you did not accept the security alert dialog box, the firewall function of your security software may be rejecting access.
    Some security software may block access without showing a security alert dialog box. To allow access, see the instructions for your security software or contact its manufacturer.

    If the firewall blocks network communication, we recommend adding the following internal/external ports in your firewall:

    • For network scanning: UDP 54925.
    • For network printing/scanning: UDP 137 and UDP 161.

If you still cannot print, the correct IP address and Subnet Mask may not be assigned to the Brother machine. Consult your system administrator, or network administrator.

> 6-1. Remove your Brother machine from your list of available printers, and then add it again.

> 6-2. Make sure your router or hub allows communication on the network via Bonjour.

  1. Remove your Brother machine from your list of available printers.
    (macOS 13 or later)
    1. Click Apple Menu and select System Settings.
    2. Scroll and select Printers & Scanners in the left navigation bar.
    3. Select your Brother machine from the list.
      If your printer name is not listed, go to Step 2.
    4. Click Remove Printer or Remove Fax.
      When the confirmation screen appears, click Remove Printer or Remove Fax again.
    (macOS 12 or earlier)
    1. Click the Apple Menu and select System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select your Brother machine from the list.
      If your printer name is not listed, go to Step 2.
    3. Click the - button to remove your machine.
      When the screen asking if you want to delete your Brother machine appears, click Delete Printer.
  2. Add your Brother machine to the printer list.
    1. (macOS 13 or later)
      Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.

      (macOS 12 or earlier)
      Click the + icon below the Printers pane on the left.
       
    2. Select your Brother machine, and then select your model's name from the Use pop-up menu.
      If your printer name is not listed, your Mac's IP address or Subnet Mask may not be correct. Consult your Network Administrator.
    3. Click Add.

If your network has no administrator, or if you are the network's administrator, do the following:

  1. Reset the network settings.
    > Click here to see how to reset the network settings.
  2. Wait at least three minutes for the machine to join the network.
  3. Repeat Steps 1-2.

 

6-2. Make sure your router or hub allows communication on the network via Bonjour.

The router or hub may be set to block the Bonjour software. Consult your router's or hub's documentation and check its settings.
If you do not know whether the router or hub supports Bonjour, or the method for changing the settings, contact its manufacturer.

 

If you still cannot print, the correct IP address and Subnet Mask may not be assigned to the Brother machine. Consult your system administrator, or network administrator.
