How can I connect the printer to my mobile device via Wi-Fi®?

Connecting your printer and a mobile device using Wireless Direct

Connect your printer to a mobile device using Wireless Direct. Using this method, the printer serves as a wireless network access point.

 

Connect your printer as follows:

  1. Confirm the Wireless Direct settings of the printer from the computer using the Printer Setting Tool, or from the printer.

    1. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
    2. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click [Communication Settings].
    3. Confirm that [Wireless Direct] is selected for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab.

    1. On your printer, press the Menu /(Select) button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button.
    2. Press the Menu /(Select) button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button.
    3. Select [Direct], and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button. The Wireless Direct icon (Wireless Direct) icon appears on the printer's LCD.
  2. On the printer, press the Menu /(Select) button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button. Set [On/Off] to [On].

  3. Use your computer or mobile device to select the SSID of the printer. In the Wi-Fi settings screen of your mobile device, select the SSID of the printer and enter the password.
    • The factory default SSID and password are as follows:
      SSID: "DIRECT-*****_RJ-4250WB" where *****is the last five digits of the serial number. (You can find the serial number label on the bottom of the printer.)
    • The password: "425*****" where *****is the last five digits of the serial number.

Connecting your printer and a mobile device using Infrastructure mode

Connect your printer to a mobile device using a Wi-Fi access point/router.
 

Connect your printer as follows:

  1. First, write down the SSID (network name) and password (network key) of your Wi-Fi access point/router.
     
  2. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
     
  3. On the printer, press the Menu/ (Select) button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button. Set [On/Off] to [On].
     
  4. Configure the Infrastructure Mode settings of the printer.

    1. Connect the printer and computer with a USB cable.
    2. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click [Communication Settings].
    3. Select [Wireless LAN] for [Selected Interface] in the [General] tab, and select [Infrastructure] for [Communication Mode] in [Wireless Settings] in the [Wireless LAN] tab.

    1. On the printer, press the Menu /(Select) button to select the [WLAN] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button.
    2. Press the Menu /(Select) button to select the [Mode] menu, and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button.
    3. Select [Infrastructure], and then press the Feed (Feed) / OK button.
       
  5. Start the Printer Setting Tool on your computer, and click the [Communication Settings] button.
    Select [Wireless Settings] in the [Wireless LAN] tab.
    Enter the SSID that you wrote down, or click [Search] and select the SSID from the displayed list.
     
  6. Enter the password as [Passphrase].

    The required information depends on the authentication method and encryption mode; enter only the information relevant to your network environment.

  7. Click [Apply].
    When the connection between the printer and your Wi-Fi access point/router is established, the (Wi-Fi) icon appears on the printer's LCD. Computers and mobile devices that are on the same network as the printer will have access to the printer.
    • To change any other network settings, use the Printer Setting Tool. For more information, see the FAQ: "Using the Printer Setting Tool (for Windows)".
    • To connect your mobile device to the Wi-Fi access point/router, select the SSID and enter the password of the Wi-Fi access point/router to establish the connection between the mobile device and Wi-Fi access point/router.
Important
  • If you are going to connect the printer to your network, we recommend that you contact your system administrator prior to installation. You must confirm your Wi-Fi settings before you proceed with this installation.
     
  • To configure the Wi-Fi settings again, or if the status of printer's Wi-Fi connection is unknown, reset the Wi-Fi settings of the printer.
    1. Press the Power (Power) button to turn the printer off.
    2. Press and hold the Feed (Feed) / OK button and the Power (Power) button for about five seconds.
      The LED indicator starts blinking in green.
    3. While pressing the Power (Power) button, press the Feed (Feed) / OK button twice.
    4. Release the Power (Power) button.
