Scan and save a document in PDF format using the SCAN key on my Brother machine (Scan to File)
You can scan and save a document in PDF format to a preferred folder by pressing the SCAN key on the control panel of your Brother machine.
Follow the instructions below to configure and use the Scan to File feature.
NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product and operating system and may differ from your Brother machine and operating system.
STEP A: Configure the Scan to File feature
(Windows)

Open the ControlCenter.

Click or (Start) > (All Programs or All apps >) Brother > Brother Utilities. -
Windows 8
On the Start screen, click .
If is not on the Start screen, right-click somewhere on an empty spot, and then click, All Apps from the bar.
Click Brother Utilities.

- Select Scan.
- Click ControlCenter4.

Open Brother Utilities.

Click (Start) > All Programs > Brother > [model name] > ControlCenter4.

Open Device Scan Settings window.
In Home Mode:
Click Device Settings tab > Device Scan Settings.
In Advanced Mode:
Click Device Settings tab > Device Scan Settings.

The Device Scan Settings window will appear. Click the File tab and select PDF(*.pdf) in File Type. Configure the settings and click OK. For example, you can set the prefix text used for the file name of the scanned data in the File Name box. You can also set the folder to save the scanned data in the Scan Location field.

(Macintosh)
This step is available until macOS 10.14.
(Available only for applicable models)
If you use macOS 10.14 or later, go to Downloads section of this website to check the Brother iPrint&Scan.
If you see the Brother iPrint&Scan in the Downloads section, you must install Brother iPrint&Scan and iPrint&Scan Push Scan Tool.

After install the iPrint&Scan Push Scan Tool, you must configure your Brother machine's scan button settings from the Brother iPrint&Scan.

Open the ControlCenter.
To open the ControlCenter2 application, click Go from the Finder bar, Applications > Brother > ControlCenter. Double click the ControlCenter.
The ControlCenter will open and an icon will be placed in the dock. - Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click on File.

Click the Device Button tab and select PDF(*.pdf) in File Type. Configure the settings and click OK. For example, you can set the prefix text used for the file name of the scanned data in the File Name box. You can also set the folder to save the scanned data in the Destination Folder.

STEP B: Use the Scan to File feature from the SCAN key on Brother machine key
a. Non-Touchscreen Models:

Click the Device Settings tab, and then click the Remote Setup.
The Remote Setup window appears.
<Windows> (The example below uses Home Mode)
<Macintosh>

Select Scan to PC in the folder tree.
Select Scan to File from the pop-up menu.
- Click OK to close the Remote Setup window.
- Place a document to be scanned in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

Press Scan to PC.
The machine scans the document.
b. Touchscreen Models:
- Place a document to be scanned in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).
- Swipe Left or Right, or press the Left or Right arrow to display Scan 1.
- Press to PC.
- Swipe Left or Right to display to File.
- Press to File and then OK.

If multiple computers are connected to the machine, press the Up or Down arrow to display the destination computer you want.
Press the destination computer. -
Press Start.
The machine starts the scanning process.
