FAQs & Troubleshooting

What is an 'In-Box'(built-in) Driver' and 'Native Brother Printer Driver'?

An in-box driver is a driver that is supplied with the Windows®XP operating system. These drivers have been developed in conjunction with Microsoft®. Generally speaking, we recommend that you use an in-box driver if available.

However, in some cases, Brother may have developed a specific 'Native Device driver' for your Brother product.

A native Brother printer driver is a driver developed exclusively by Brother. Generally speaking, these drivers are more powerful than the 'in-box' drivers that are supplied with the Windows® XP operating system. We recommend the use of a native driver (if available) if you wish to access all of the driver features described in your product literature. However, in some circumstances, a driver developed by Brother may only have the same capabilities as an in-box driver that may be available for a different model.
