FAQs & Troubleshooting

Scan a document in OS X 10.8/macOS 10.12 - 10.15.

You can scan a document using one of the following methods:

NOTE: The screens may differ depending on operating system being used and your Brother machine.

 - Using the Image Capture application
 - Scanning directly from the "Print & Scan" or "Printers & Scanners" section

 

 

Method 1: Using the Image Capture application
In order to use Image Capture included with Macintosh OS X 10.8 or later, the ICA Scanner Driver is required.

The Brother Scanner Driver (CUPS Printer Driver for some models) for OS X 10.8 contains the ICA Scanner Driver.

The Scanner Driver for OS X 10.9 or later contains the ICA Scanner Driver.

To install the ICA Scanner Driver, please install the Scanner Driver or CUPS Printer Driver.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Connect your Brother machine to the Macintosh using a USB cable. Or connect your Brother machine to the same LAN (if you are using a network model) where the Macintosh is connected.
  2. Launch the Image Capture application. (Choose Go => Application => Image Capture.)
     
    Launch the Image Capture.

     

  3. Choose the machine from the list on the left side of the screen.

    Hint:
    If you connected the Brother machine and your Macintosh with a USB cable, you will see the machine in the DEVICES area. If connected via LAN, you will see it in the SHARED area.

    If you cannot see the machine in the DEVICES area or the SHARED area, point the mouse pointer over the area, and then click Show.

  4. Place your document in the ADF or on the scanner glass.
    - If you place the document in the ADF, check Use Document Feeder and the size of your document.

    - If you place the document on the scanner glass, un-check Use Document Feeder and the size of your document.

    Notes:
    * If your Brother machine does not have an ADF, the Use Document Feeder option does not show up.
    * If you choose the Detect Separate Items from the size of your document, the program will detect each image and save them as separate files. If you choose the Detect Enclosing Box from the size of your document, the program will detect image as one item and save as one file. If the program does not automatically crop the document as you want, you can do it manually by dragging the mouse pointer over the portion you want to scan from the dialog box that can be accessed by clicking on Show Details.
     
  5. Choose the destination folder or destination application for Scan To.

    Hint:
    You can adjust the following settings, if needed, in the dialog box accessed by clicking on Show Details. Please note that the item name and assignable value may vary depending on the machine.

     

    • Scan Mode: Choose "Document Feeder" or "Flatbed".
    • Kind: Choose from "Color", "Black & White" or "Text".
    • Resolution: Choose the resolution you want to scan your document at.
    • Use Custom Size: Check this box to customize the document size.
    • Size: Choose the paper size of the document being scanned from the Document Feeder or the scan area from the Flatbed.
    • Orientation or Rotation Angle: Choose the orientation of the document from the Document Feeder or the angle of the scan from the flatbed.
    • Auto selection: If you check Use Custom Size when using the Flatbed, you can choose the scanner driver's automatic detection features.
    • Duplex: You can choose 2-sided (duplex) scanning from the Document Feeder if the model you are using supports this feature.
    • Scan To: Choose the destination folder or destination application.
    • Name: Enter the prefix text used for the name of the scanned image.
    • Format: Choose the file format of the scanned data.
    • Combine into single document: When you choose PDF or TIFF for the file format, check this box to scan a document as one item and saved as one file.
    • Image Correction: From the manual setting you can adjust Brightness, Contrast, Tint, Temperature and Saturation.
    You can adjust the scan settings by clicking on Show Details.

     

  6. Click Scan to start scanning.

Method 2: Scanning directly from the "Print & Scan" or "Printers & Scanners" section
If you already added your Brother machine in the Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners section, you can scan directly from there.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Connect your Brother machine to the Macintosh using a USB cable. Or connect your Brother machine to the same LAN (if you are using a network model) where the Macintosh is connected.
  2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  3. Click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
  4. Choose the machine from the list on the left side of the screen.
  5. Click Scan and then click Open Scanner....

  6. Place your document in the ADF or on the scanner glass.
    - If you place the document in the ADF, check Use Document Feeder and the size of your document.

    - If you place the document on the scanner glass, un-check Use Document Feeder and the size of your document.

    Notes:
    * If your Brother machine does not have an ADF, the Use Document Feeder option does not show up.
