  • Scan a document (USB) using XSane or GIMP

  • XSane method

    1. The Brother Linux scanner driver works only with a superuser by default.
      Login as a superuser ( or use "sudo" option)

      You can allow normal users to scan by changing settings.
      Please refer to this document for further help:

    2. If XSane is not installed, please install it from Synaptic Package Manager.

    3. Start XSane.

    4. Click the scan button to start scanning.

    Scan (GIMP)

    2. If XSane is not installed, please install itfrom Synaptic Package Manager.

    3. Start GIMP.

    4. Click "Create", "XSane", and "scanner name" from the File menu.

    5. Click the scan button to start scanning.

  • Uninstall the scanner driver

  • NOTE: Please make sure Scan-key-tool is uninstalled before the uninstallation.
    Uninstall Scan-key-tool
    1. Login as a superuser ( or use "sudo" option if it is required )
    2. Uninstall scanner driver
    Command (for dpkg)  :  dpkg  -P  (scanner-driver-name)
    Command (for rpm)  :  rpm  -e  (scanner-driver-name)
    Example(for dpkg) | Example(for rpm)

    NOTE: If you see error messages about removing directories, please ignore them.
    3. Check the uninstallation.
    Command (for dpkg)  :  dpkg  -l  |  grep  brscan
    Command (for rpm)  :  rpm  -qa  |  grep  brscan
    Example(for dpkg) | Example(for rpm)

  • Flat Bed scan with brscan, brscan2, brscan3 (XSANE 0.99 or later)
  • *** Scanning area is left aligned.(Ignore the guide triangle on the center of the scan glass frame)
    *** If the printer status is "ADF ready" the scanning source will be ADF.

  • ADF scan with brscan3 (XSANE 0.99 or later)
  • 1. Set the document on the ADF
    2. Select "Centrally aligned ADF scan" as the document source at the xsane main window.
    3. Set the number of pages at the xsane main window.
    4. Start the scan

  • ADF scan with brscan, brscan2 (XSANE 0.99 or later)
  • Scanning area is left aligned. Please adjust the scanning area as follows.(Documents will be loaded for centrally aligned)
    1. Put one of the document on the flat bed glass adjusting to the center.
    2. Get a preview of the full scanning area.
    3. Select the area of the document size
    4. Put the document on the ADF and adjust the paper guides.
    5. Set the number of pages at the xsane main window.
    6. Start the scan
    *** The scan area setting can be saved by "add the selection for batch scan".

  • Delete a network scanner entry

  • ***Use brsaneconfig (for brscan models), brsaneconfig2 (for brscan2 models) or brsaneconfig3 (for brscan3 models) accordingly.
    Command:  brsaneconfig2  -r  SCANNER-NAME

  • Duplex Scan(XSANE)
  • ver.0.98 and earlier:
    1. Set "Auto Document Feeder(Duplex)" as scan source.
    2. Select "Automatic Document Feeder(Duplex)" at "ADF" section. (Preference->setup->Enhancement)
    3. Start to scan.
    ver.0.99 and later:
    1. Set "Auto Document Feeder(Duplex)" as scan source.
    2. Start to scan.

    Uninstall the scanner driver (dpkg)
    # dpkg -P brscan2
