Use PC-FAX with CUPS (Command/GUI)


  • Set up Brother PC-FAX interface
  • 1. Install sun-java and check the full path of the sun-java's path
    Example : /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/java (sun-java6-jre with Ubuntu 8.04)
    2. Edit "/usr/bin/brpcfax" script
    Edit the java's path in the following line in "/usr/bin/brpcfax"
    *** the line is located around 37th line in the file.
    Before the edit;
    extarg="'java -jar /usr/local/Brother/fax/brmfcfax.jar 2>/dev/null'"
    
    After the edit;
    extarg="'/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/java -jar /usr/local/Brother/fax/brmfcfax.jar 2>/dev/null'"
    
    3. Run Brother PC-FAX interface
    Command  :  brpcfax  (filename)

  • Sending a PC-FAX to a single destination via the Brother PC-FAX interface
  • 1. Run Brother PC-FAX interface
    Command  :  brpcfax  (filename)
    2. Input a faxnumber and click "Send"

  • Sending a PC-FAX to multiple destinations via the Brother PC-FAX interface
  • 1. Run the Brother PC-FAX interface
    Command  :  brpcfax  (filename)
    2. Click "Group Send"
    3. Input a group filename

  • Set up OpenOffice for the Brother PC-FAX interface
  • 1. Check that the Brother PC-FAX interface works.
    2. Run spadmin command to add your PC-FAX to the printer list
    ***spadmin command location example : /usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin (Ubuntu8.04), /usr/lib/ooo-3.0/program/spadmin (Mandriva2009.0)
    3. On spadmin menu, click "New Printer" and select/input the following parameters according the menu.
    - Select "Connect a fax device"
    - Select "A specific driver, to adapt the format to another printer"
    - Select "Generic Printer"
    - Input "/usr/bin/brpcfax"
    4. Use Brother PC-FAX Interface from OpenOffice
    4-1. Select the PC-FAX as the destination device on OpenOffice print menu
    4-2. Click "OK" for OpenOffice dialer.
    4-3. Brother PC-FAX Interface will come up.
    4-4. Input fax number or group file and click "Send".

  • Set up the OpenOffice dialer (Sending PC-FAX to a single destination)
  • 1. Run spadmin command to add your PC-FAX to the printer list
    ***spadmin command location (Example on Ubuntu8.04) : /usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin
    2. On spadmin menu, click "New Printer" and select/input the following parameters according the menu.
    - Select "Connect a fax device"
    - Select "A default driver"
    - Input "brpcfax -o fax-number=(PHONE)"
    - Input the name of the printer
    3. Use Brother PC-FAX Interface from OpenOffice
    3-1. Select the FAX printer as the destination device on OpenOffice print menu
    3-2. Type the FAX number to the OpenOffice dialer.

  • Sending a PC-FAX to a single destination via the Command line interface
  • Command  :  brpcfax  -o  fax-number=(fax-number)  (filename)
    Example
    Available File Format : .ps
    ***If you would like to change the paper size, change them from BRFAX's option menu on "http://localhost:631/printers"

  • Sending a PC-FAX to multiple destinations via the Command line interface
  • 1. Create a Fax Number list file
    Format and rules of the file
  • One destination number / One line
  • Tilde(~) and 2 byte caracter can not be used.
  • Maximum 50 destinations
  • "#" for comment out mark.
  • Hyphen("-") works as a pause.
  • Example
    2. Check/Set permission
    Check a permission of "read" and "execute" to All Users for the Fax Number list file and the directory where that exists.
    3. Sending PC-FAX
    Command  :  brpcfax  -o  fax-broadcast=(number-list-filename)  (filename)
