I want to recalibrate the colors on my printer, how do I do this?

Color accuracy is affected by many factors such as operating environment, life of consumables, paper, computer OS and applications. Brother's BR-Script driver offers the most accurate color output for both Windows and Macintosh users. Brother web based color calibration is designed to work with the BR-Script Driver (Brother's Postscript Level 3 language emulations software) to achieve the best color output for your printing environment. To learn about the differences between Brother's PCL and the BR-Script printer drivers click here.

If your printer is not printing colors as expected, you may find that re-calibrating the printer will improve the overall color fidelity of the machine. However, it is equally important that your monitor and scanner are also calibrated as this will ensure the closest possible match between the colors you see on the screen and those produced by the printer. Infact most problems associated with color printing stem from reconciling the differences between the colors available (referred to as a gamut) on your (Red, Green and Blue) RGB computer display and the gamut available on a (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) printer.

This FAQ explains how to use Brother web based color calibration to achieve the best printing output on your Brother HL-2600CN and HL-3450CN printers. However, it does not detail the steps you must follow to calibrate your monitor or scanner. Refer to your monitor and scanner documentation for more information on calibration.

This printer also supports Pantone color calibration. For more information on Pantone printing, click here.

Requirements

To use Brother web based color calibration you must have the following:

  • The printer connected via the Ethernet port.
  • The TCP/IP address of the printer (if you do not know the TCP/IP address for the printer, please contact your system administrator). For more information on setting the IP address click here.
  • A computer with access to the network and web browser software.
  • The BR-Script printer driver installed on your computer.

Recommended Paper for Calibration

For the most accurate color output we recommend using one of the following paper types for calibration:

  • Neusiedler® Color Copy 90 g/m2
  • Hammermill® Laser Print 24lb

However, if you are unable to obtain this paper, please use the paper that you typically use.

How does it work?

Starting the Calibian process

To access the color calibration home page enter the following URL in your browser software.
http://***.***.***.***/printer/calset.html
("***.***.***.***" is the TCP/IP address of the printer)

You will then see the homepage for the calibration menu.

  • Basic Calibration - This selection is for accessing the general color calibration procedure. For most environments this is all the calibration that will be necessary. See the next section "Calibrating the colors" for a detailed explanation of the basic calibration process.
  • Print the advanced calibration patch - The calibration patch is for advanced calibration and requires measurement of color patches with a Colorimeter. An authorized Brother technician should perform this calibration. Please contact your local Brother office for more information.
  • Print calibration parameters - This selection will print a list of the stored calibration settings for each color. This list should be printed and saved for future reference. Click here for information on printing the calibration parameters.
  • Factory reset - This selection resets all color calibration settings back to default settings. Click here for more information on factory resetting the calibration parameters.

Calibrating the colors

  1. From the "Basic Calibration" option select the "Basic calibration: Normal Mode" option and click "Submit".

  2. The printer will then print a calibration sheet in either 600dpi mode (Normal mode) or CAPT mode.

  3. You will then see the calibration screen.

There are three steps to accurately performing the calibration.

Step 1: Enter the position where the dots first appear in a square for each color.

Step 2: Enter the range where the densities of the squares most closely match the background density of the middle rows. You may find that it is easier to judge the density match by holding the paper up to the light and viewing from the reverse side.

Step 3: For each of the colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow[Green]), enter the column and row position for where you cannot distinguish between the background and the square.

Step 4: After you enter all the values for each color, click Submit to accept the settings.

The printer engine is now calibrated and optimized for the best possible print quality based on your lighting conditions, paper and the way you interpreted the clibration process.
