How to solve installation problem with my Brother printer using a USB/local connection for Windows® XP/ Windows Vista®? (video FAQ available)

To see if you have already connected Brother printer to your PC.
To see if you have NOT connected Brother printer to your PC.

 

Case-1: You have already connected Brother printer to your PC

In this case, you need to uninstall the drivers and then re-install in order to complete a successful installation.
Before starting the procedures, please make sure the USB cable is disconnected from your PC.

 

Step-1 Create a folder named Brother on your desktop

  1. Right click on a free space on your desktop and select New.
  2. Select Folder and name the folder "Brother".

Step-2 Download the Uninstall utility and the printer driver

 

The download instructions provided are for Internet Explorer® version 7 or greater.

 
  • For Windows® XP and Vista®
    1. > Go to support.brother.com to download the Uninstall utility.

      1. Select your region.
      2. Select your country & language (if required).
      3. From the series menu, select your model.
      4. Confirm by clicking on the ">>".
      5. Select Downloads, select (ALL).
      6. Select your Operating System, select your preferred language, click Search.
      7. Select the Uninstall Tool.
      8. Click on More Information, click on Download.
      9. Please read carefully the End Users License Agreement and click I Accept.
      10. At the File Download security window click Save.
      11. Navigate to the Brother folder you have created earlier and click Save.

       

    2. > Go to support.brother.com to download the printer driver.

      1. Select your region.
      2. Select your country & language (if required).
      3. From the series menu, select your model.
      4. Confirm by clicking on the ">>".
      5. Select Downloads, select (ALL).
      6. Select your Operating System, select your preferred language, click Search.
      7. Select WHQL certified Driver.
      8. Click on More Information, click on Download.
      9. Please read carefully the End Users License Agreement and click I Accept.
      10. At the File Download security window click Save.
      11. Navigate to the Brother folder you have created earlier and click Save.

Step-3 Complete the uninstall using the Uninstall utility

  • For Windows® XP and Vista®
    1. Double click on your Brother folder on your desktop.
    2. Double click the downloaded file called uninsprn1.exe.
    3. If you obtain the "Open File -Security Window", click Run, otherwise continue.
    4. At the WinZip Self Extractor click Browse.
    5. Browse for the Brother folder and click OK.
    6. Click Unzip.
    7. Click OK at the WinZip Self extractor confirmation window.
    8. Close the WinZip Self Extractor window.
    9. Double click on the bruins.exe and an Uninstaller window will appear.
    10. From the Printer driver tab select the model of your printer.
    11. Click Uninstall.
    12. Click OK when asked "Are you sure?"
    13. Click OK to restart your computer and complete the uninstall.
    14. Once your computer has restarted continue to the next step.

Step-4 Decompress the previously downloaded driver

 

  • For Windows® XP and Vista®
    1. Double click on your Brother folder on your desktop.
    2. Double click the downloaded file.  Xxxx_inst_y.exe.

      "Xxxx" indicates your model number; "y" indicates the version of the driver.

       

       

    3. If you obtain the "Open File -Security Window", click Run, otherwise continue.
    4. At the WinZip Self extractor click Browse.
    5. Browse for the Brother folder and click OK.
    6. At the WinZip Self Extractor  window click Unzip.
    7. Click OK at WinZip Self Extractor confirmation window.
    8. Close the WinZip Self Extractor window.
    9. The system will generate a folder called "English" or other language depending on which language you selected in the previous procedure.

Step-5 Install the printer driver

 

  • For Windows® XP
    1. Connect the interface cable and power on your Brother printer.
    2. When the "New Hardware Wizard": appears then select No not At This Time. Click Next.
    3. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Click Next.
    4. Select Search for the best driver in these selections. Check Include this location in the search box.
    5. Click on Browse, and navigate to the Brother folder you created previously then select your language or region folder and click OK.
    6. Click Next.
    7. Click Finish.
    8. The message Your new hardware is installed and ready to use is displayed on the left bottom of your desktop.
  • For Windows Vista®
    1. Connect the interface cable and power on your Brother printer.
    2. Select Locate and install driver software (Recommended) in Found New Hardware window.
    3. Click I don't have the disc. Show me other option.
    4. Click Browse my computer for driver software (Advanced).
    5. Click on Browse, and navigate to the Brother folder you created previously then select your language or region folder and click OK. Click Next.
    6. At the The software for this device has been successfully installed window. Click Close.
    7. Once installation finishes, the message of Your devises are ready to use will be displayed on the left bottom of your computer.
    8. Completed.

Case-2: You have NOT connected Brother printer to your PC

In this case, you need to download the drivers and then install it to your PC.
Before starting the procedures, please make sure the USB cable is disconnected from your PC.

 

Step-1 Create a folder named Brother on your desktop

  1. Right click on a free space on your desktop and select New.
  2. Select Folder and name the folder "Brother".
