Replace the toner cartridge.
The Brother machine has separate consumables for the toner cartridge and the drum unit. Verify you replace only the toner cartridge and not the drum unit. If you want to know their difference, refer to "What is the difference between the toner cartridge and the drum unit?"
Do NOT use flammable substances or any type of spray to clean the inside or outside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock.
To ensure optimum print quality, we recommend the use of Brother toner consumables. To obtain consumables for your Brother printer, contact your local re-seller.
For the order number (Order No.) of the toner cartridge, please refer to the User's guide provided with your Brother Printer or the Consumables & Options page of your model on Brother Solutions Center. To visit Consumables & Options page, click your model name link (e.g. HL-XXXX * ) on the top section and then click "Consumables & Options" link on the opened page. * XXXX stands for your model name.
Follow the procedure below to replace toner cartridges.
- Press the Cover release button and then open the Front Cover.
- Pull out the Drum unit assembly.
- We recommend that you place the Drum unit assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you spill or scatter toner accidentally.
- To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown below.
- Press the Lock Lever down, and lift the Toner cartridge out of the Drum unit assembly.
Handle the Toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water immediately.
- Be sure to seal the toner cartridge tightly so that toner powder does not spill out of the cartridges.
- Dispose of the used toner cartridge in accordance with local plastic waste regulations.
- Unpack the new Toner cartridge. Keeping the cartridge horizontal, gently rock it from side to side 5 or 6 times.
- Remove the protective cover.
Install the Toner cartridge immediately after you remove the protective cover. Do not touch the shaded parts shown below.
- Install the new toner cartridge into the Drum unit until you hear it lock into place. When the Toner cartridge is installed correctly, the Lock lever is lifted automatically.
Make sure you install the Toner cartridge correctly or it may separate from the Drum unit when you pick up the Drum unit assembly.
- Clean the primary corona wire inside the Drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. Return the tab to the Home position before you re-install the Drum unit assembly.
Make sure that you return the tab to the home position(s) before you re-install the Drum unit assembly in the printer; otherwise, printed pages may have vertical stripes.
- Re-install the Drum unit assembly into the printer. Close the Front cover.
We recommend that you clean the printer when you replace the Toner cartridge.
